Unaware of the underlying tension, the driver wasn't sure how to respond.
Elara smoothed out the scarf and stared straight ahead. "With all the events he's been attending, he must be drinking a lot. Thanks for taking such good care of him lately."
Over the years, the driver had received his fair share of thank-you gifts from Elara, so he felt perfectly at ease chatting with her. Assuming she was just acting like a concerned wife, he replied without thinking, "Haha, you're worrying too much, ma'am. Mr. Beckett hasn't had many events lately, and he's barely been drinking at all."
Elara paused, though the revelation didn't shock her.
Ever since Vivian had texted her the photo of Julian in the shower yesterday, she had suspected his 'busy work schedule' and endless 'social events' were complete lies.
She didn't press the issue, smoothly steering the conversation toward his family and asking how his son was doing in school.
The driver was a talkative guy. Whenever he drove Julian, his boss was usually working in the back, leaving the car in dead silence.
Now that Elara had shown interest, he immediately opened up, complaining good-naturedly about his son's poor grades and refusal to study.
"Thankfully, Mr. Beckett hasn't had many evening events lately, so I haven't had to drive him much after hours. I've finally had time to keep an eye on my brat at night, and he's been a lot better about his homework these past few days."
Elara nodded along sympathetically, agreeing that parenting was exhausting and thanking him for his hard work.
Internally, however, her mind was racing.
If Julian wasn't using the driver, he was taking this exact car to go on dates and head back to Vivian's place. She wondered just how much the dashcam had recorded.
Once they arrived home, the two of them showered.
Melody stubbornly refused to sleep, insisting on waiting for Julian. Elara had no choice but to keep her company and watch TV until past eleven, when the little girl finally crashed from sheer exhaustion.
Returning to her own room, Elara didn't rush to bed either.
She sent Julian a text asking when he'd be home, mentioning that Melody was still waiting up for him.
She then grabbed her laptop, polished her resume, and printed out a copy to take to the law firm interviews tomorrow.
Afterward, she began drafting a divorce agreement, roughly outlining their marital assets.
Having sent the messages, she set her phone aside and went to sleep.
When she woke up the next morning, the chat history remained exactly as she had left it.
Without batting an eye, Elara typed out a perfectly calm, concerned follow-up: [How are you feeling? Do you feel sick?]
Julian finally replied at 10:00 AM.
He only responded to her morning text.
Julian: [A little hungover, but I'm fine. Just need some rest.]
By that time, Elara had already arrived at the law firm.
Sarah Norwood was leading her down the hallway to her office, and Elara texted him back as they walked: [Did you stay at the loft near the office last night?]
[Is there any food in the fridge? Do you want me to order you some delivery?]
