Julian Beckett froze as if someone had just announced the end of the world. He knew he should react, but his body felt rusted, his mental gears grinding to a sudden halt.

He couldn't believe Elara had moved out without a single word.

Yet, another voice in the back of his mind whispered that this was exactly the kind of thing she would do.

Why was he so shocked?

Over the years, Elara had poured all her energy into their child and into him. She had softened, rarely showing her sharp edges, leading him to almost forget that she had never been a helpless, docile victim.

Through the phone, Brenda couldn't see his expression. Hearing his stunned question, she wondered how he could possibly be in the dark as she explained the details of the move.

When she finished, a heavy silence hung on the line, causing her to pause.

Julian hadn't really processed a word she said until she finally asked, "Did Mrs. Beckett not tell you?"

"..."

He snapped back to reality and sank into his chair. "Did she say anything to you before she left?"

"She told me not to call and tell you," Brenda admitted.

Julian was speechless.

The few arguments he and Elara ever had were always confined to their upstairs bedroom or happened after the staff had gone to sleep. The housekeepers could only guess at the tension, never knowing the details.

But now, with Elara secretly moving out and Julian not coming home for a week—blissfully unaware that his wife and daughter were gone—anyone with half a brain could see their family issues were far more severe than a simple spat.

Brenda had worked for the family for years. She spent more time with Elara and Melody every day than she did with her own children.

She had practically watched the little girl grow up.

The silence stretched between them.

After a long moment, Brenda asked carefully, "Did you two... have a fight?"

It took Julian a while to offer a dismissive reply. "No."

They hadn't fought. They were just getting a divorce.

But there was no need to explain that to the help.
