Pushing his luck, he demanded, "Promise me you'll think of me first."
Elara hesitated.
That felt like a massive commitment.
But Sebastian wasn't letting her off the hook. He stared her down, exuding an aura that said he would sit there until she caved.
She tried to match his stubbornness, but a few seconds later, she threw in the towel and looked away. "Fine, fine, I promise."
He smiled in triumph. "Then it's settled."
She gave a noncommittal nod. "Mhm."
He saw right through her brush-off, but didn't get angry. Eyes glinting with amusement, he slowly dragged his thumb across the pulse of her wrist. "If you break our promise, I'll be furious," he warned, halfway between a joke and a threat.
Elara stiffened. She didn't give her word lightly. Once she made a promise, she kept it, because breaking it would hurt the other person and leave her crippled with guilt.
She had agreed because she knew she would inevitably need his resources. Calling him first instead of Maddox was just a matter of dialing a different number. It wasn't a huge deal.
But now that he was framing it as a sacred pact, she realized the gravity of what she had agreed to.
Unfortunately, she had already sworn to it. It was too late to backpedal now.
"Okay."
Accepting her fate with a wry smile, she made it official. "I promise."
Staring pointedly down at the hand still shackling her wrist, she gave her arm a little shake. "Can you let me go now?"
"Sure."
To his credit, he dropped his hold immediately.
Exhaling a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding, Elara scrambled back to the safety of her couch.
Noticing her panic, he chuckled softly and stood up, giving her space.
She looked up. "Are you leaving?"
