Melody genuinely struggled to explain her reasoning. She looked from Elara to Jocelyn, piecing her words together carefully. "In case bad guys come... he can fight them for us."
Elara was speechless.
Jocelyn was equally baffled. "Fight? Why would anyone be fighting?"
They lived in a perfectly safe neighborhood with excellent security. Guests had to register at the gate, and the elevators required a fob or a passcode. With all those layers of security, what kind of lunatic would jump through so many hoops just to come up and fight them?
While Jocelyn remained utterly perplexed, something clicked for Elara.
Recently, they had read a picture book together where the main character, raised by a single mom, was bullied. Melody had asked her at the time, 'If his daddy was there, would he protect him from being bullied?'
Elara clearly remembered her own response: 'Maybe.'
'But not necessarily. The people who bully others might pick on him today because he doesn't have a dad, but tomorrow they might pick on him for his clothes, or even just for talking too loud.'
She hadn't given her a black-and-white answer, leaving the analysis hanging in the air.
Melody had absorbed those words, falling silent with furrowed brows in deep contemplation. Finally, the little girl had concluded: 'It's not his fault he doesn't have a dad. It's the bullies' fault. Bullying is just wrong.'
Elara had praised her immensely for that brilliant takeaway.
What she hadn't anticipated was that her daughter had internalized the harsh reality of it: that even if bullying was always wrong, having a father figure around might at least deter the bullies. It would be one less reason to be targeted.
And now, Melody was projecting that fear onto their own reality.
It was just the three of them at home. Her grandmother was getting older, she was just a little kid, and only her mother was strong enough to take care of them.
So Melody naturally worried: What if a bad guy actually broke in? What were they going to do?
Was her mommy supposed to fight off danger all by herself to protect her and her grandma?
But what about her mommy?
