Julian stared at the court summons, sinking into a heavy silence.
It was impossible to tell if he was desperately formulating a counter-strategy or simply lost in his own thoughts.
Feeling a knot of anxiety in her stomach, Vivian couldn't help but call out to him softly, "Julian."
Julian snapped out of it, tossing the summons and the envelope onto his desk. "I'm sorry for dragging you into this."
Vivian said nothing. She simply pushed off the desk, took a step forward, and wrapped her arms around Julian's neck. Julian naturally pulled her down into his lap.
Vivian sat on his lap, resting her head against his shoulder. They held each other in silence for a moment before she murmured, "I don't blame you."
"You took me all the way to the Kingsport auction just to buy me the jewelry I fell in love with. That made me so happy."
"It's just... neither of us expected Elara to pull a dirty trick like this..."
Spending his own money to buy a gift, only to be sued for it by his wife—Julian was the one who had been thoroughly humiliated.
"Don't worry." Julian awkwardly cut off her words, leaning down to kiss her lips. "I'll hire a lawyer to defend you. Let me handle the money."
"I don't think that will work."
This time, Vivian couldn't be appeased with sweet words. She analyzed the situation logically, "You two aren't officially divorced yet. Technically, Elara owns half of every dollar you spend. If you pay this off for me, it's just going to look like another deliberate transfer of assets, which will completely ruin your own case. Elara could easily go after you for that too."
"Besides..."
Vivian paused, deciding to phrase her warning as gently as possible. "There's a good chance she froze your accounts entirely because of this exact transaction."
All of his bank accounts were frozen solid, and there was no telling when the block would be lifted. He was currently surviving off a credit card belonging to Meredith Beckett. Did he even have the cash to bail her out?
Meredith could probably scrape the funds together, and she'd likely be willing to, but neither of them could guarantee Elara wouldn't weaponize that against them in court, too.
