"Mommy," Melody called out suddenly.
"I'm right here," Elara answered softly.
Sensing a trace of anxiety in her daughter, she gently pulled the little girl's hands into her own, lightly squeezing her chubby fingers in a silent gesture of support and comfort.
Encouraged by the warmth, Melody finally voiced the question that had been deeply troubling her.
"If Sebastian is even busier than Daddy, but he can still find time to play with us on the weekend, why couldn't Daddy do that?"
The question hung heavily in the air.
Not only did he never spend weekends with them, but he rarely even came home. On weekdays, he always claimed he was working late...
If they were both busy—and Sebastian had significantly more work on his plate—why did Sebastian have time for them while Daddy never did?
Before she had a point of comparison, Melody simply assumed her dad was overwhelmed with work and genuinely couldn't make it home. Not wanting to be a difficult, unreasonable child, she had tried her best to be a perfect angel, only ever throwing a tantrum when his behavior became completely unacceptable.
Now that she realized it was possible for incredibly busy people to still make time for playdates and dinners, the sheer cruelty of her dad's actions became devastatingly clear.
Even though she knew he didn't want them anymore.
She still couldn't comprehend why he had treated them like that.
The unexpected question hit Elara like a physical blow, her expression instantly freezing.
Melody, naturally hyper-aware of shifts in emotion, noticed Elara's distress immediately. Panic flared in her eyes as she nervously searched her mother's face. "I'm sorry, Mommy, I..."
Before she could finish, a warm, familiar pair of arms pulled her small body into a tight embrace.
Elara held her daughter close, being careful not to squeeze too tightly. She kept her arms wrapped securely around the small frame, making sure Melody felt entirely surrounded by her warmth and unwavering presence.
"Mommy isn't mad at you, sweetie."
