As soon as her shift ended, Elara Sterling cleared off her desk, shoved her laptop and pending paperwork into her tote bag, and said a quick goodbye to Sarah Norwood before rushing out the door.

Melody Beckett had grown used to Elara going into the office. The little girl stayed home with Jocelyn Sterling, behaving perfectly, and always timed her WhatsApp messages on her grandmother's phone perfectly for Elara's lunch break and evening commute.

Today's message was another voice note.

It chimed in the exact moment Elara stepped out of the office doors, her timing impeccable.

"Mommy, Mommy, are you off work?"

"Grandma made beef stew this afternoon. It smells amazing!"

"When are you coming home? We can eat dinner as soon as you get here."

Elara listened to her daughter's sweet voice, walking briskly toward her car as she recorded a reply. "I just got off work. I'm heading to the car now."

"It's almost time for dinner, so don't eat any snacks. Just wait for me, I'll be home soon."

Melody replied almost instantly. "Okay, Mommy! I stopped eating snacks a long time ago. I'm saving all my room for Grandma's beef stew!"

"It just smells so good that my tummy is rumbling. I'm so hungry!"

"Listen, Mommy!"

Worried Elara wouldn't believe her, Melody had actually pressed the phone against her stomach, sending over a few seconds of genuine, rumbly audio.

Elara couldn't help but laugh, completely charmed by the sheer cuteness of it. She walked out of the law firm with a bright smile on her face, heading toward the parking garage. She was so distracted that she didn't notice the person beside her until someone suddenly grabbed her arm as they brushed past.

"Elara!"
