Elara stared at him in stunned silence.

Weren't they supposed to be fixing his overly aggressive communication style?

How had he somehow managed to escalate it even further?

This wasn't right.

Elara desperately wanted to speak up and drag the conversation back to safety.

But she had no idea how to respond to his declaration of "You are the woman I love."

If she told him to stop saying things like that, it would feel hollow. Sebastian had confessed his feelings a while ago, and she had silently allowed him to keep coming over ever since. It was far too late to set that boundary now.

But if she just ignored it, it would seem as though she was accepting the title.

Elara was trapped in an impossible dilemma.

"I don't want you to feel anxious just because you don't know what I'm doing."

Before Elara could formulate a response, Sebastian launched into another explanation. "Anxiety breeds paranoia and panic. It drains you mentally and physically. I have absolutely nothing to hide from you. You might not know all the details right now, but if you give me the chance, I'll organize everything into a document and send it to you tomorrow."

"I love you because I want you to be happy, not so I can watch you tear yourself apart over me."

"A love that tortures you and brings you pain isn't love at all. It's poison."

Elara felt the breath leave her lungs.

Her body gave a violent jolt. Without meaning to, her mind flashed back to the harrowing months between realizing Julian was acting strangely and ultimately deciding to divorce him.

Because of Julian, she had spent every waking moment trapped in a paranoid spiral, second-guessing her every move. She had been terrified that Melody would be hurt, yet fundamentally unable to accept his betrayal.

She had despised Julian for cheating, but she had hated herself even more for lacking the courage to leave. She had relentlessly gaslit herself into believing her career was dead after being away for so long. Terrified she wouldn't be able to juggle work and a child alone, she had pathetically made excuses for him, convincing herself that as long as he still came home, she couldn't tear her family apart.
