When it came to his biological father, Sebastian's policy had always been to offer as little eye contact and as few words as humanly possible.

To Sebastian, sparing the man even a single glance felt like a massive waste of time and energy—not to mention an assault on his vision.

Therefore, if he could handle Samuel behind the scenes, he would absolutely never waste his breath arguing with him.

Today was no exception.

Pocketing his phone, Sebastian cast a lazy glance at the scar near Samuel's eye, letting out a laugh dripping with mockery. "Still better than getting slapped around by a woman right under Grandfather's nose."

Samuel's face paled. He jerked off the wall instinctively, standing rigid as he glared furiously at his son. "That was your doing?!"

It wasn't a question. It was a statement of fact.

Sebastian didn't bother looking at him again, brushing right past him without a second thought.

"Sebastian Vance!"

Samuel stormed after him, fully intending to exert his paternal authority. But as he rounded the corner of the hallway, he slammed right into Kendrick Vance. Instantly, Samuel froze like a choked goose, his neck stiff and eyes wide, staring dumbly at the older man without daring to utter a single syllable.

Smoothly pulling his hands from his pockets, Sebastian stepped forward to support Kendrick's arm.

Kendrick placed his hand over Sebastian's, giving it a reassuring pat before lifting his gaze. His eyes locked onto Samuel with a piercing, lethal intensity.

With guests still in the house, it wasn't the time for a scolding. Kendrick remained silent, but his frigid, warning glare was more than enough to nail Samuel to the floor.

Samuel's lips moved soundlessly. He desperately wanted to explain himself but couldn't find the words.

He knew he had lost his temper and ruined his image just now. It was his fault.

What was he supposed to tell the old man? That Sebastian had provoked him, and he was merely retaliating?

Everyone in the Vance family knew Sebastian had zero respect for him. Since the boy's mother died, Sebastian had never treated him like a father. So why would Kendrick believe Sebastian had suddenly gone out of his way to instigate a fight?

There was no way to explain it.

Because of his past transgressions, his dynamic with Sebastian was permanently fractured. No matter what happened, Samuel was always the one at a disadvantage.

No amount of defending himself would matter; Kendrick would always side with Sebastian.

Swallowing his bitter frustration, Samuel knew that making excuses would only infuriate his father further. He had no choice but to bite his tongue and take the hit.

Wilting under Kendrick's glare, Samuel hastily reined in his hostility. Just as he was about to offer an apology and grovel for forgiveness, he looked up—only to catch the faint, mocking smirk playing on Sebastian's lips.

A jolt went through Samuel as realization struck him.

When Sebastian had insulted him earlier, Samuel had been so focused on his anger that he hadn't noticed what was happening in the hallway.

But Sebastian had been facing the corridor. Even if Kendrick hadn't fully turned the corner, Sebastian would have easily seen his shadow approaching.

And that calculated insult? Sebastian had spoken it softly enough that anyone standing a few feet away wouldn't have heard a thing.
