"Yes, who is this?"

"I'm with the courier service. I have a document here that requires your personal signature. Are you at home?"

A document?

Elara Sterling was completely baffled.

The freelance work she had been doing over the past few months was strictly handled online. As for the investigation Sarah Norwood was running, Elara always picked up the documents in person at the law firm. Who on earth would be mailing her physical files?

"Who is the sender, please?" Elara asked as she walked.

The delivery driver hesitated for a moment.

"The sender's name is listed as Justice Seeker," the courier explained slowly. "It's probably a pseudonym, but there's a note saying these are highly sensitive documents that must be signed for in person. Are you available to receive them?"

"...Yes, I'm available."

After confirming her location with the driver, Elara pocketed her phone and quickened her pace toward the door.

Once she signed for the package, Elara found a quiet spot at the intersection to wait for Lester, tearing into the parcel while she stood there.

It was a thick, heavy stack. Beneath the outer packaging were multiple layers of thick bubble wrap. If not for the serious-looking manila envelope buried in the center, she would have suspected it was an elaborate prank.

Before she could open the envelope itself, Lester pulled up in the car. She quickly tucked the package away and climbed into the backseat.

They picked up Melody Beckett without a hitch and immediately headed home.

Seeing that Lester was driving them again today, Melody eagerly leaned forward. "Lester, since it's Friday, does that mean Daddy is going to get off work early too?"

Lester glanced in the rearview mirror and offered a vague reply. "I'm not too sure about that, sweetie. I haven't received any messages from Mr. Beckett asking me to pick him up early."

"Oh."

Melody's face instantly fell, and she looked up at Elara with big, pleading eyes. "Mommy, can I ask Daddy?"

"Alright."

Melody intentionally placed heavy emphasis on the words 'won't forgive', her sweet, milky voice pairing adorably with her puffed-up cheeks in a display of harmless toddler fury.

Julian agreed, sealing the promise.

Satisfied, Melody didn't end the conversation just yet. Cradling the phone, she sent a flurry of extra voice notes, reminding her dad to work hard but also to get enough rest, drink plenty of water, and take care of his health.

She chattered away endlessly, only reluctantly putting the phone down when they finally pulled up to the house.

After the mother and daughter changed their clothes, Elara played with Melody for a little while before handing her over to the nanny. She then retreated to her bedroom and finally opened the mysterious package.

Stripping away the endless layers of bubble wrap, she extracted the thick manila envelope, which was sealed with actual wax.

The sender's flair for the dramatic was so intense that Elara almost felt bad tearing into it. Instead, she grabbed a small knife, carefully sliced through the wax seal, and pulled out the contents.

The moment she pulled the stack of papers free, a few photographs fluttered to the floor.

Elara instinctively looked down, her eyes locking onto an image of Vivian Winthrop clinging intimately to Julian's arm as they walked into a restaurant.
