The block fell silently, and everyone stayed silent. In the pin-drop quiet room, the sharp *smack* of Melody slapping his hand echoed loudly.
Julian froze instantly.
The sudden strike felt as though it wasn't the block being slapped away, but his very dignity. Rage flared in Julian's chest, incinerating his reason, and his unfiltered anger radiated outward.
Melody had never seen Julian look like this. Her tiny body shrank back, completely paralyzed with fear.
"Melody."
Elara immediately stepped in front of Melody, shielding her from Julian's glare, and asked calmly, "Do you want to stop playing?"
It took Melody a long moment to snap out of it. She shook her head. "I still want to play."
But afraid that her dad was still angry, she didn't dare move.
Elara encouraged her, "Go pick it up then."
Melody looked at her, then stole a nervous glance at Julian.
Seeing that her dad looked exactly the same as usual, she tilted her head in confusion.
Had she imagined it?
Her dad wasn't actually mad.
Elara gave her a gentle nudge on the back. "Go on."
Melody nodded, stood up, trotted over, and retrieved the red block she had just swatted away.
Julian remained in the exact position he had sat down in, watching in sheer frustration as Melody ran over, ran back, sat cross-legged on the floor, and resumed building her blocks.
Amidst his shock and regret, Julian suddenly understood the logic behind Melody's behavior.
Melody was emotionally sensitive, yes, but that didn't mean she broke down crying every time she got mad.
When she was emotionally stable but angry, she would completely shut down verbally and reject the approach of anyone or anything she had decided to lock out.
And this time, the person Melody had locked out was him.
She would still play with her blocks.
She would find the pieces herself and grab them herself.
She just refused to accept his help or touch anything he had laid hands on.
The root of this lay in the two voice notes Melody had sent him last night—the ones that still had unread red dots next to them.
Without making a sound, her face deadpan, Melody snatched the carton with her little hand and ruthlessly lobbed it to the side.
Though the carton was small, it still had some weight to it, landing on the floor with a soft *thud*.
Unlike the sudden shock of the block being thrown, Julian was ready for this. He calmly grabbed another carton and, before Melody could even turn her head back, offered it to her again. "Your favorite milk."
Without looking at him, Melody snatched the carton and threw it.
*Thud—*
Julian grabbed another one and handed it to her. "I'm sorry."
Those were the three words Melody hated hearing most right now. Before the sentence had even left his mouth, the carton was chucked across the room.
There was only one left. Julian didn't hesitate; he handed it straight to her. "This is the last one."
Melody didn't care if it was the last one or not. The second Julian's hand entered her space, the milk was snatched and tossed.
"I'm sor—"
Julian started to apologize again, but remembering how much Melody hated hearing it, he swallowed the rest of the word.
