Elara had casually mentioned Melody's birthday party to Meredith before, but she was always met with a dismissive "we'll see" or "let's talk about it closer to the date." It was purely brush-offs.
Since Meredith notoriously disliked her granddaughter, Elara was never quite sure if she would actually show up.
Melody was naturally terrified of her grandmother anyway, so Elara never wanted to force the issue, nor did she care much whether Meredith attended or not.
That was until Julian told her he wanted to invite Vivian Winthrop to the party.
During Sebastian Vance's recent birthday party, there was no way Julian hadn't noticed Melody's visceral rejection of Vivian. He knew exactly what was going on.
Yet he still fiercely insisted on bringing Vivian, and his underlying motive wasn't hard to decipher.
Even though she had outright refused him, who knew if a man hopelessly blinded by a new romance would actually listen?
It certainly wouldn't be the first time he completely neglected his wife and daughter, disregarding their feelings for Vivian's sake.
What if Julian forcefully brought Vivian to the venue, humiliating Elara and Melody in front of all the teachers and parents?
When Jocelyn woke up from her nap, she asked Elara a few more questions about Julian, and Elara told her everything she could.
After listening, Jocelyn gently warned her to keep a close eye on Meredith.
It was a sudden epiphany for Elara. Besides Julian, Vivian's biggest shield and sponsor was Meredith.
Meredith was practically counting the days until Julian and Elara finalized their divorce. If Vivian batted her eyelashes and asked for help, Meredith would gladly move mountains for her.
So Elara immediately changed her clothes, grabbed some local delicacies her mother had brought from out of town, hailed a cab to the Beckett estate, and formally extended the invitation to Grandpa Beckett.
The moment Meredith returned from the outside, Elara knew she had made the right call.
Despite it being faint, Elara could detect the familiar, sickly-sweet perfume lingering on Meredith's clothes.
It was Vivian's signature scent.
Meeting Meredith's displeased gaze, Elara maintained a flawless smile, speaking with poised confidence, "Melody is really hoping her grandparents can make it."
Unfortunately, Meredith had walked in before they could finish the conversation.
Asking this question meant he fully approved of the event.
"Everything is arranged," Elara nodded. "I hired an event studio to handle the design, and over the weekend, Melody even helped put up some of the decorations. We just need to finalize the finishing touches tomorrow."
Maddox Beckett gave an approving nod. "What time does it start?"
Elara replied, "Since it's mainly for the young kids, we didn't want to keep them up past their bedtimes. It starts right after they get out of school in the late afternoon and should wrap up around seven."
Maddox Beckett waved a dismissive hand. "Good. I'll be there."
It was a firm promise.
Meredith's face drained of color. "Richard!"
