Chapter 107

MATTHEW

Of course, of course. I apologize for the intrusion. But he didn’t move away. “I was also curious about Theo’s mother. The reports indicate she passed away recently? What a terrible thing to a friend.

Every alarm in my body started screaming. That’s none of your business.

Merely expressing condolences. His tone remained pleasant, but his eyes were sharp, calculating as his eyes never seemed to leave Theo although he was looking at me like afree. It must be difficult, raising a child alone after such a tragedy.

We’re late for an appointment,I said, already moving toward the entrance with Theo. Excuse us.

Of course. Safe travels back to Silver Moon.He called after us. And Mr. Morrison? If you ever need anything while you’re here -medical care, legal assistance, anything at allthe Alpha King’s office is always available to help.

I didn’t respond, just pushed through the doors and headed for the elevator with Theo practically running to keep up with me, nmy long legs against his.

Daddy, that man was scary,Theo whispered once we were safely inside.

I know, buddy. But he’s gone now. We’re okay.

But my hands were shaking as I pressed the button for the third floor.

That man had known too much. Had known we were leaving today, had known about Theo’s treatment, had asked specifically

about Bianca.

Who was he? And why was he interested in us?

Dr. Fisher’s session with Theo helped calm my racing thoughts somewhat. She was encouraging about his progress, confident about the transition to video therapy, reassuring about the challenges of returning home.

You’ve both done excellent work, she told me as Theo played in the waiting room afterward. Theo is in a much healthier place mentally than when you arrived. He still has grief to process, obviously, but he’s no longer stuck in the guilt cycle. That’s significant progress.

Thank you for everything,I said sincerely. I don’t know what we would have done without you.

You would have found another therapist and done the work anyway. Because you’re a good father who loves his son.She handed me a folder. This is Theo’s treatment plan going forward. Video sessions twice a week initially, then we’ll reassess. And Matthew? Don’t hesitate to call if you need anything. Even just to talk.

I left her office feeling marginally better, ready to face the drive home.

But as we headed back to the car, I couldn’t shake the memory of that man. His questions about Bianca. His knowledge of our

movements.

It wasn’t until we were an hour outside BloodMoon City, Theo asleep in the backseat, that I remembered to check the official welcome email I’d received when our entry was approved.

I pulled it up at a rest stop, reading through the formal language about our approved residence, the contact information for city services, the signature at the bottom.

Thorne Lockwood

Chief of Staff

Office of the Alpha King

BloodMoon City

Thorne Lockwood.

The man who’d approached us outside Dr. Fisher’s office.

My stomach dropped. That hadn’t been some random city official showing professional interest. That had been the Chief of Staff to the Alpha Kingone of the most powerful people in BloodMoon Citypersonally approaching me to ask about my dead

wife.

Why?

I sat in the parking lot, staring at that signature, trying to make sense of it.

Thorne had been the one to approve our entry to BloodMoon City. Had granted us access when I’d been rejected multiple times in the past for business purposes. Had made it possible for Theo to get the treatment he desperately needed.

And I’d just been incredibly rude to him. Had refused his handshake, questioned his interest, practically accused him of being threatening.

God, I was an idiot.

The man had probably been checking on us out of genuine concernmaking sure the child whose case had crossed his desk was actually receiving good care. And I’d treated him like he was some kind of threat instead of the person who’d helped us when we

needed it most.

I needed to apologize. Needed to send a thank you email at minimum, explaining my overreaction, expressing gratitude for the entry approval and the opportunity for Theo to receive treatment.

I pulled out my phone and started composing an email.

*Mr. Thorne,*

*I want to apologize for my behavior this morning outside Dr. Fisher’s office. I was caught offguard by your approach and reacted defensively, which was inappropriate given your position and the generosity you’ve shown my family.*

*Thank you for approving our entry to BloodMoon City. The treatment Theo received from Dr. Fisher has been lifechanging. He’s made more progress in four weeks than in months of previous therapy. That wouldn’t have been possible without your office’s support.*

I’m sorry again for my rudeness. I hope you’ll accept this apology and know that I’m deeply grateful for everything you’ve done for us.*

Respectfully,

Matthew Morrison

I hit send before I could secondguess the wording.

Then I sat in the car and felt like an absolute fool for treating someone who’d helped us like they were a threat.
