“Because maybe the people threatening her have made it clear that involving you would result in consequences she’s not willing to face.” Dr. Martinez paused. “Or because she’s so used to handling everything through manipulation and control that it doesn’t occur to her to simply be honest and ask for help.”

I thought about the messages Marcus had shown me. The vandalism. The systematic isolation Mia had experienced since Bianca’s death.

What if all of that hadn’t been pack members acting on their own? What if someone had been orchestrating it, pushing Mia toward desperate measures?

“If someone is coercing her,” I said slowly, “what would they want with Theo?”

“That’s the question you need to answer. And Matthew? You need to answer it quickly. Because if Mia is being pressured to deliver your son to someone, her failed attempt today means the pressure is going to increase. She’s going to try again, probably sooner rather than later.”

The session with Dr. Fisher ended, and Theo appeared in the kitchen doorway looking drained but calmer.

“Dr. Fisher says I did good,” he reported. “She says I listened to my gut feeling and protected myself. And she says it’s okay that I still want the pictures of Mama even though Aunty Mia was using them to trick me.”

“Dr. Fisher is absolutely right.” I pulled him into a hug. “And Theo? I’m going to find more pictures of Mama for you. Real ones, from our actual albums and my old phone backups. You shouldn’t have to get memories of your mother from someone who’s

trying to hurt you.”

“Okay.” He leaned against me. “Daddy? I’m really tired. Can I watch TV and not think for a while?”

“You can watch whatever you want.”

I settled him in the living room with his favorite show and returned to the kitchen to find my phone buzzing with multiple

notifications.

Text from Marcus: *Security detail in place. Two guards on the house, one specifically assigned to Theo.*

Email from Principal Davis: *Incident report filed. Ms. Roberts banned from school grounds. Please confirm receipt.*

And a message from an unknown number: *You can’t protect him forever. She’ll find a way. They always do.*

I stared at that last message, my blood running cold.

Someone was watching. Knew about what had happened at the school today. Was confident that Mia would try again.

I forwarded the message to Marcus with a single line: *Trace this. Now.*

Then I sent a text to Mia: *Stay away from my son. If you come near Theo again, I will press charges for attempted kidnapping. This is your only warning.
