Chapter 127
Chapter 127
BIANCA POV
“We need to test Louis’s blood,” I said. “See if he’s inherited Elena’s abilities. If he has, we need to know so we can prepare. And
if he hasn’t
“Then we need to understand why they think he does.” Rivera set down the folder and looked at me directly. “Bianca, if you’re right about this–if Louis is being targeted because of his mother’s curse–breaking abilities–then you’re in danger too.”
I’d been trying not to think about that. “They don’t know I’m–”
“They triggered Louis’s curse and forced you to treat him publicly,” Rivera interrupted. “In front of hospital staff, using techniques that only curse–breakers know. Bianca, if Thorne’s people were watching–and I think they were–they know exactly what you are now.”
The implication settled over me like ice water.
I’d been operating under the assumption that my curse–breaking abilities were still secret. That my work with Louis had been discrete enough to avoid notice.
But the attack today had been designed to draw me out. To make me use my skills publicly, where they could be observed and documented.
They knew. Thorne knew. Which meant I was no longer just helping investigate him–I was a target.
“We need to move Louis somewhere safer,” I said, forcing my voice to remain clinical. “This house is secure, but if they’re willing to trigger curses in broad daylight at a hospital—”
“There is nowhere safer than here,” Rivera said. “This house has Alpha King–level security. Klaus has already increased the guard rotation. And Bianca, I’m not sending you away either, so don’t even suggest it.”
“I wasn’t going to suggest leaving. I was going to suggest we go on the offensive.” I pulled up another file on my laptop. “Vera. She’s been hiding from Thorne’s people for over a decade. She knows how they operate, what they’re planning. If anyone can tell us what ritual they’re preparing Louis for—”
“She’s still recovering from nearly being murdered,” Rivera pointed out.
“Then we ask her carefully. But Lucian, we’re running out of time. The woman Louis saw in his vision–whoever she is–she said his blood would ‘unlock what they need.‘ That suggests they’re preparing for something specific. Something that requires curse–breaker blood and can’t wait much longer.”
Rivera was quiet, his expression thoughtful. “The pack assembly.”
I looked at him. “What?”
“Matthew’s pack is having an assembly next week. Major event, all pack members required to attend. Lots of chaos, lots of distraction.” He met my eyes. “Perfect opportunity for someone to make a move on a high–value target.”
My stomach clenched. “Theo.”
“Theo is Matthew’s son. Bianca’s son. If Louis inherited curse–breaking abilities from Elena, and if Theo inherited them from you-”
“Then they might be targeting both children,” I finished, horror washing over me. “Oh God. Matthew. I need to warn him.” “How?” Rivera asked gently. “You’re supposed to be dead. And even if you could contact him without revealing you’re alive, what would you say? ‘Your ex–wife who you think is cremated wants to warn you that dark witches are targeting your son for blood rituals‘?”

He was right. There was no way to warn Matthew that didn’t involve either exposing myself or sounding completely insane.
“Then we need another approach,” I said, my mind racing. “Klaus. Can he warn Matthew? Alpha King to Alpha? Some kind of official security advisory about threats to pack leaders‘ families?”
“That might work.” Rivera pulled out his phone. “Klaus has been looking for a reason to establish formal contact with Matthew anyway. This gives him one.”
While Rivera called Klaus–at 2:30 in the morning, because apparently Alpha King business didn’t follow normal hours–I returned to Elena’s medical records.
There had to be something I was missing. Some detail that would explain why curse–breakers were being targeted, what ritual required their blood, why it was urgent enough to risk public attacks.
I found it in a footnote on the autopsy report. A small notation that the medical examiner had flagged but apparently never followed up on:
*Subject’s blood samples showed unusual properties when exposed to certain magical catalysts. Recommend further testing for potential hereditary magical anomalies.*
Hereditary magical anomalies.
I pulled up my own medical records–the ones from my initial physical when I’d started working at BloodMoon General. The ones that had included routine blood work.
And there, in the notes section, almost identical language:
*Patient’s blood shows unusual reactive properties to standard magical testing protocols. Within normal ranges but noteworthy. No clinical significance identified.*
My blood and Elena’s blood had the same unusual properties. Properties that were “noteworthy” but had never been investigated further because we’d both been hiding what we were.
Properties that someone was now targeting.
“Lucian,” I said slowly. “I think I know what they want our blood for.”
He ended his call with Klaus and turned to me. “What?”
“Curse–breaker blood doesn’t just have the ability to break curses. It has properties that make it resistant to most forms of magical manipulation. That’s why we can work with dark magic without being corrupted by it–our blood literally repels magical contamination.”
“Okay. So?”
“So imagine you’re trying to create a curse that’s powerful enough to affect someone with significant magical protections. An Alpha King, maybe. Or an entire pack of Alphas. Standard curse work wouldn’t be strong enough–their natural magical resistance would fight it off.”
Understanding dawned in Rivera’s eyes. “But if you used curse–breaker blood as a component-
“You could create a curse that bypasses normal magical resistance,” I finished. “Because curse–breaker blood is already adapted
to work against magical defenses. It’s the perfect vector for delivering a curse that nothing can stop.”
