Chapter 186

MATTHEW

The Alpha King’s office didn’t answer on the first day.

Marcus had made the initial contact attempt the morning after the attack, using the secure channel that Klaus Blackwood’s office had established when we’d been approved for entry into Silver Moon territory. The channel connected, technically – the signal went through, the protocol completed, the system indicated an active line. But no one answered. Marcus left a detailed message with the operational specifics, the tactical profile of the attackers, the wolfsbane, the numbers, everything that the Alpha King’s security apparatus would need to understand what had happened in my back garden.

No response came.

On the second day, Marcus tried three more times across different hours, using two different contact methods. The secure channel, and then the administrative line that Thorne had provided when we’d met

in my office. Both connected. Neither produced a human being.

On the third day, I told Marcus to stop trying.

He looked at me across the desk with the expression he used when he disagreed with something and was deciding how directly to say so. “The communication failure is itself significant information,” he said.

“I know,” I said. “But we can’t know whether it’s a deliberate block or a genuine technical problem or something in between, and chasing it is taking time and attention I need for things I can actually move forward.” I set down the report I’d been reading. “They know how to find us. When they want contact, they’ll make it.”

Marcus let a beat pass. “Thorne was the primary contact,” he said.

“Yes.”

“And Thorne attended the assembly and left without incident, and since then the Alpha King’s office has been unreachable.”

“Yes,” I said again.
