Unmatched Wife: Not His To Claim Anymore novel Chapter 33

MATTHEW

The anger pouring out of me in waves was enough to send her moving backwards, her body shaking as she looked down at the tiles.

Room 304,she whispered. But Alpha, please, Dr. Hartwick needs to speak with you first

I was already moving, not listening to what she had to say, Theo’s small hand in mine as we headed for the elevators. Room 304. The same floor as Mia, just down the hall. Why hadn’t anyone told me? Why hadn’t I thought to check before now?

We took the elevator up, and with each floor that passed, the dread grew heavier. Something was wrong. I could feel it in my bones, in the way my wolf was suddenly alert and agitated.

Room 304 was at the end of a quiet corridor. As we approached, I saw Dr. Hartwick standing outside the door with two nurses, their expressions grave as they looked subdued and uneasy about something. The two nurses immediately stared at the wall, finding the bland wallpaper interesting to look at.

Alpha Morrison.Dr. Hartwick stepped forward, blocking our path. His face was exhausted, and something in his eyes made my blood run cold.

I’ve been trying to reach you. There’s something we need to discuss about Mia’s condition. A test that I want to run by you

Where’s Mama?Theo interrupted, trying to peer around the doctor’s legs. Is she in there? Can we see her?

Dr. Hartwick’s expression broke for a moment before he covered it up but I was able to see something that looked like, genuine pain flashing across his features.

Alpha, please. Let’s talk privately. Your son doesn’t need to hear this.

She’s my wife.My voice came out rough, filled with fury as I added. And his mother. Whatever you have to say, say it now.

Dr. Hartwick looked at me for a long moment, then at Theo, then back to me.

The Luna didn’t survive the procedure, Alpha Morrison. She coded on the table twice during the ritual. We managed to revive her both times, but the strain on her body was too severe. Her Luna abilities were already compromised by that time, and attempting the healing ritual in that stateHe paused for a moment before continuing.

It was too much. Her heart gave out after the procedure concluded. We tried everything we could, but there was nothing

His voice trailed off as my mind kept on repeating the words that had just been spoken in my head over and over. The words stopped making sense. Didn’t survive. Coded twice. Heart gave out.

Dead.

Bianca was dead.

No.The word came out flat, disbelieving. That’s not possible. She was fine. You said the procedure was successful. You said….

I said Mia would make a full recovery,Dr. Hartwick corrected, his voice hard now. I never said anything about the Luna’s condition because you didn’t ask. You ordered that she should be moved to a VIP room and then disappeared. You haven’t checked on her once in three days.

You should have told me-

I tried!Dr. Hartwick’s composure shattered as he spat out the words. I tried to tell you multiple times. But you were too busy with Mia to bother about her.

Theo’s hand tightened in mine, his small voice confused and frightened. Daddy? What does he mean? Where’s Mama?

I couldn’t answer. Couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t process what I was hearing because it couldn’t be true. It couldn’t

“I want to see her,I managed, my voice hollow. I need to see her.

Dr. Hartwick hesitated, glancing at Theo. Alpha, perhaps your son should wait outside-

I want to see Mama!Theo was crying now, trying to pull away from me toward the door. I want to see her! Let me see her!

Dr. Hartwick’s shoulders sagged in defeat. He stepped aside, and one of the nurses opened the door to room 304.

The room was dim, quiet, filled with the antiseptic smell of hospitals.

Bianca lay on the bed, perfectly still, covered by a white sheet up to her shoulders. Her face was pale, peaceful, like she was sleeping. But I knew that she was never going to wake up.

Mama?Theo whispered, pulling free from my grip and running to the bedside. Mama, wake up. Wake up, please. I’m sorry. I’m sorry I was mean. I love you. Please wake up.
