Ava flinched hard and took off, terrified Bruno was about to say something that’d wreck her social life for good.
“Bruno, seriously, you’re killing me!” someone yelled, cracking up. “You scared her so bad she ran!”
Bruno Lancefield didn’t say a word. He stood there and stared, then glanced sideways at the guy next to him and let out a dry scoff
What a clueless moron.
“Yo, Bruno!” Ivan called out, waving and jogging over.
Bruno stopped and gave him a look. “You’re the Q-1-B squad instructor?”
Ivan didn’t get why he was asking but clapped him on the shoulder anyway. “Yeah, Tam! What’s up?”
Bruno looked like he’d hit a wall. “That girl you were yelling orders at earlier. Who is she?”
“Ava? She’s the captain of our squad.”

Bruno froze. He locked eyes with Ivan’s wide, honest gaze and tried not to let his expression crack. “You’ve got serious balls.”
He turned and walked away. Ivan blinked, confused. He looked over at another teammate. “What’s his deal? His face looked like he’s fighting a stomach cramp or something. You think he actually is?”
Caspian shrugged. “Beats me. He’s been off all day. Just now, he walked up to some random girl, saluted her outta nowhere, and scared her so bad she bolted.”
Ivan burst out laughing, loud and obnoxious. “Bruno! You trying to flirt with students by saluting them? Are you serious right
now?!”
Bruno heard him from down the path and let out two icy laughs. “Ivan, do yourself a favor and shut your mouth,” he called back. “I’m only saying this once because we’re friends.”
He looked like a man on the edge. Out of everyone here, he was the only one who’d stumbled onto Laurent’s secret.
If he could go back to last night, he’d blind himself without hesitation. Now he was stuck with this earth-shattering secret and
ľ couldn’t breathe a word of it. Not even a hint.
How was that fair? He was just a grunt. This was way above his level.
After dinner, Ava didn’t head back to the dorms. She stayed in the girls’ building. Ms. Levis heard she got promoted to captain and came over to congratulate her.
At 8:30, the whole squad regrouped. They ran through a rushed thirty-minute training, then broke into loose circles.
“T-1-A instructor, come on! Let’s see what you’ve got!”
“Yeah, sing us a military song!”
“T-1-B! You’re up!”

Come on, Instructor Kelleway! We’re rooting for you!”

The field buzzed with noise. The young instructors were goofing off with the students. Nobody cared about rank anymore.
The military songs started rising louder and louder, like a battle of voices. Then someone switched it up with a set of heavy-hitting combat drills, and the crowd went wild, cheering like crazy.
The whole area lit up with energy.
“Q-1-A, step up!”
“Let’s go, girls! Q-1-A! Let’s see some fire!”
The hype hit the girls’ squad next, and the noise doubled.
Derrick called out Malory. She stepped into the spotlight, totally confident, strutting like she owned the place. She held a hand to her lips.
“You guys are way too loud. Chill.”
The crowd cracked up, loud and rowdy.
When the laughter faded, everyone quieted down. Aff to the side, watching the scene play out. Noelle and Zoey flanked her
like they were guarding royalty.
Music kicked in. Lights swept across the field. Malory stepped into them, lifted her arms, and rolled her hips into a sharp groove. Her dance was fierce, full of attitude, and sexy enough to blow the roof off.
“D*mn, that’s hot,” Zoey muttered under her breath.
“She’s got the body for it,”

it looked painful. “She’s just an attention sponge.”
Ava didn’t blink. Her eyes stayed locked on Malory. She heard her friends bickering and said, “She’s killing it ‘ma giri, and even feel my heart racing. Say what you want, she’s got it. Body, confidence, moves. I’m not looking away.”
She’d never danced like that, but Ava appreciated the hell out of it. The way Malory moved-graceful and wild-made it clear she wasn’t some random. She’d trained for this.
As soon as the dance ended, the place exploded in applause. People were about to start chanting again when Malory raised her hand and waved them down.
She shot the crowd a smile and said, “Alright, boys, take it down a notch, yeah?”
The noise died instantly. Malory’s smile stretched wider. “How about someone from Q-1-B takes the stage next? What do you think?”
The crowd roared back. The guys clapped thunderously. “Q-1-B! Let’s go!”

“I swear, what is her deal?! Noelle snapped. “She wants the spotlight, fine. But why drag our squad into her little show?”
“Ava, she’s one hundred percent targeting you,” Zoey whispered under her breath.
Ava stared at Malory for a moment. Her lips curved slightly before she looked away.
If that was supposed to bait her, it failed miserably. She didn’t care for drama, and she wasn’t desperate for attention.
Malory noticed Ava’s glance drop, but kept pressing. “Q-1-B! Let’s go! Someone get up here!”
She raised her finger to her lips and shushed the crowd. Then, her eyes locked directly onto Ava. “Q-1-B captain! How about you?” Her voice carried across the entire field. Even the random onlookers, who had no clue what sparked this, started cheering and shouting, pushing the pressure higher.
Ivan stepped up beside Derrick and muttered, “Is your captain seriously trying to pick a fight with ours?”
Derrick clapped him on the shoulder. “Chill. This isn’t boot camp. Let the kids handle their own stuff. It’s a harmless call-out, not a
war.”
Ivan had no idea how to shut this down. The crowd was too loud, too wild. And Ava? She was cornered. If she turned it down, Unit A would act like they won. But if she stepped up? Malory had just burned the stage with a sizzling routine that left every guy drooling.
The whole arena was already on fire. No matter what Ava did, it felt like she’d come out losing.
Ivan hesitated, then walked to her side and said quietly, “If you don’t wanna go through with it, I’ll shut her down for you.”
Ava gave him a smile. “Instructor, I don’t think Malory’s unbeatable. Let me check something first:”
She stood and turned to her squad. “Alright, I didn’t plan on performing. But Unit A’s acting like we don’t even matter. That dance Malory did? I won’t lie-I can’t beat it.
“But I know there’s someone here who can. I’m asking-who wants to shut them up? This is your chance. Our instructor deserves to hold his head high. And you? You might just become the name everyone femembers.
“Any volunteers?”
She looked around the group with calm determination,
Her words struck a nerve. The crowd was already taunting them, mocking their silence.
Ava didn’t need to yell. It hinted at something better-recognition, attention, even a little fame back on campus. Seven or eight hands shot up. Ava smiled and waved them over.
She led them a few steps aside. They whispered together quickly. Then, they picked one girl to represent Unit 8.
This girl had real moves. And a voice. Her performance wasn’t just hot-it was bold, flashy, and powerful. Different from Malory’s. but just as crowd-stealing.
Ava returned to her seat and watched it all unfold, grinning

Noelle teaned in and gave her a thumbs-up. “That was smooth. Really smooth.”

Before, she just thought Ava was tough. A fighter. Someone who stood up for herself when needed. That alone made Noelle like
her.
But now? Ava wasn’t just gutsy. She was clever, gracious, and sharp. She didn’t even need to step onstage to win
The other girls in Unit B were watching her differently too. Compared to Unit A’s diva captain, Ava seemed thoughtful and down-to- earth. She handed the spotlight over without a second thought.
Ava beamed. “I’m not anything special. We’ve just got some serious talent on our side.”.
Noelle burst out laughing. “Wow, look at you, Captain Morren. All generous and stuff. You really didn’t want the spotlight?”
Ava smiled at the stage. “If someone wants to shine, I say let them. And if you ever want your moment, Noelle, it’s yours.”
Noelle laughed harder. Somewhere between the jokes, they both realized they had more in common than they thought.
Zoey looked at them like they were speaking alien. “What the hell are you two even talking about? None of that made sense.”

The second the girl finished performing, the crowd broke into wild applause that shook the field.

Ava walked right up with a big grin and said, “You were amazing! Seriously, thank you! You just saved Unit B’s entire reputation. Instructor Cavalli, we didn’t lose. Your dignity is saved!”
Ivan chuckled at her tone and smiled along with her.
While Unit B was all smiles, the mood over at Unit A had completely soured.
They had their moment. Malory’s dance gave them both flash and praise. She could’ve stepped off the field gracefully. But instead, she had to provoke Unit B.
“She really thought that’d work?”
“That was just an excuse to shake her *ss.”
“She just wants attention. And she gets it because she’s the captain. Doesn’t ask anyone. Just jumps in.”
“Yeah, selfish much? At least Unit B’s captain asked her squad befor
making a move. Our girl just made it all about her.”
“Keep your voice down. You know her and Ava already yesterday. This was just round two.”
“She’s so petty. If she’s got a problem, go report it. Oh wait, she won’t. And didn’t that officer explain everything last night? Why’s she still dragging it out?”
Malory heard all of it. No one was even trying to
to whisper anymore/Her face flushed hot as she bit down hard on her lip. Her eyes welled up, but she held the tears back.
Ava had just finished talking and glanced across the field. She taught Malory staring at her with watery eyes and clenched lips.
Ava pressed her mouth shut for a boot then turned away without a word.
The party didn’t wind down until close to 9:30. Once the hype finally broke, the crowd started to split. Ava said goodbye to Noelle and Zoey, then walked off by herself.
The path was lit up on both sides, and the night felt still. Her building wasn’t far, but tonight, the one who usually waited in the
shadows wasn’t there.
The soldier on duty was new. She didn’t recognize him at all. Ava headed upstairs. She stopped for a moment in front of room 308. then turned and walked into 307.
The day’s training hadn’t been too hard, but it lasted forever. The nonstop drills had drained her. She lifted her arm and sniffed. Gross. She reeked. She grabbed clean clothes, headed for the shower, and scrubbed herself down. Afterward, she washed her uniform in the sink.
She dried her hair until it was still a little damp and let it fall loose behind her. She leaned back on the bed, grabbed the book she’d been reading, and picked up where she left off.
Her eyelids started to feel heavy. She glanced at the clock. It was already eleven. Her eyes flicked to the walkie-talkie by her bed. Not a single beep.

She closed the book, got up, and went to brush her teeth and rinse her face. She looked at herself in the mirror, gave her cheek a soft slap, and let out a quiet sigh. What the hell was she waiting for?
She slept through the night without a single dream. Her alarm went off right on time the next morning. The uniform she’d washed was fully dry. She dressed fast.
Just as she finished, someone knocked on the door. She opened it and saw.aurent standing there.
“Morning,” he said. “You want breakfast before heading out? can tell your instructor.”
Ava looked at the bags in his hands. “Where’s that from?”
“Picked it up outside,” Laurent said.
“You just got back?”
“Yeah. Some stuff came up last night. Didn’t make it back to the dorm.”
He stepped inside, popped open the packaging, and started placing breakfast on the small table in her room.
Ava noticed the dirt on his coat and the way his hair was a mess. He clearly hadn’t even gone to his own roam yet.
“You already ate? Want to eat with me?”
Laurent pulled out a bowl of hot pumpkin soup and slid a spoon into it, “Yeah.”
The breakfast spread was huge. But despite saying they’d eat together, Ava was the only one eating. Laurent just sat beside her, quietly handing her what she needed. When she put her spoon down, he smiled. “That’s all?”
Ava nodded. “Why aren’t you eating?”
“Who said I’m not?” He smiled again and picked up a meatball with a fork. “I just wanted to watch you eat first. You look so content when you eat. It makes me feel lucky.”
Ava frowned slightly but let it go. “You don’t have to wait for me to finish first. I don’t like that. If we eat, we eat together. No ladies first’ crap.”
Laurent paused for a second, then smiled softly. “Alright. From now on, we eat together.”
Once breakfast was over, he walked her downstairs. “I’ll head over on my own,” Ava said. “You should get some sleep. You look dead.”
Laurent didn’t say anything. He stayed a few steps behind her. He didn’t walk beside her like he had yesterday. If she didn’t want people to know about them, then he’d honor that.
As Ava neared the guard station, she spotted the same young soldier from earlier.
Bruno saw her too. He stayed put.
