Ava glanced at it and pretended not to see, staying silent in the group chat the entire time. So this was what Tylissa and the others meant by the so-called welcome party earlier.

Ava then checked the small group chat with Zoey and the others. The chat had already piled up to over a hundred messages, mostly about where they had gone and what they had eaten. Malory even sent a photo of her freshly done nails.

Ava: I’m back at school. I have time before 5 p.m. if you’d like to meet up.

Zoey: You’re back, Ava! Noelle and I have gone out, and we won’t be back until tonight.”

Naomi: I’m doing pottery.

She included pictures of it.

Malory: Ava, I’m out shopping. Want to drop by?

Ava: Never mind, I’ll just stay in the dorm and lounge around.

Malory: Ava, how can you just laze around? Get out here, let’s hang around and look at handsome guys. We’ve got to make use of every chance we get!

Ava: Forget it, knock yourself out. I’ll pass.

After sending that message, Ava saw that someone had tagged her in the group chat. This time, she couldn’t pretend she hadn’t

seen it.

Gabriel: Ava, how about you go on stage? We’ll let the girls shine this time.

Jonah Garrick: Sounds good.

Chester Sanchez: Getting Ava to perform is a great idea!

Looking at the long string of messages that followed, Ava felt a headache coming on. Despite laying low, they were dragging her

r

into it!

Brandon Wolffe texted, “I know that you’re online, Ava. Setting yourself to invisible doesn’t hide the fact that you’re online.”

Ava, who had just set her status to invisible, was speechless. Since she’d been exposed, Ava had no choice but to turn off invisible mode.

Ava: I just saw all your messages. Gosh, it’s lively here-I can see that we’ve got plenty of talented people with us. The welcome party is a chance to bring honor to the class, so everyone should actively sign up. I’ll be cheering for you!

Jonah: Ava, you’re making it sound like you don’t want to be dragged into this.

Brandon: Who said I’m talented? I have none!

Chester: Me too!

Ava was flabbergasted. What kind of strange classmates had she ended up with?

Florence Copen, the class advisor, sent a message as well.

Florence: Ava, since everyone has such confidence in you, then you’ll be in charge of the welcome party performance! Discuss i with your classmates.

Gabriel: Way to go, Ava!

Justin Clareth: We got your back, Ava!

Ava rubbed her temples. Her classmates were a handful!

At 4.50 p.m., Ava got ready to head out. Mason’s secretary was already on the way to pick her up.

She changed into a dress, put on some light makeup, grabbed her bag, and headed downstairs.

“You’re back, Queenie!”

Standing on the stairs, Ava looked at Queenie on the steps below.

Queenie’s face looked pale. Hearing someone call out to her, she raised her head and saw Ava not far away, forcing out a faint smile. “Good afternoon, Ava.”

Ava was about to mention that she had seen her at the mall earlier, but noticing her poor complexion, she was startled and quick said, “Are you sick, Queenie? Why do you look so pale?”

Queenie pressed her lips together. “I’m fine, just a bit tired. I’ll be okay after resting. Are you going out on a date?”

Ava nodded. “See you, Queenie. We’ll talk later.”

Queenie shifted slightly to the side, leaning against the wall, watching Ava walk past her.

She stood there for a long, long time. Only after Ava’s figure had completely disappeared did she withdraw hei gaze, a bitter smile ingering on her lips.
