Ethan immediately let go of Ava’s hand and said gently, “Sorry. I was so annoyed by him that I couldn’t control myself.”
Ava rubbed her wrist and said in a low voice, “I’ll head over first. You two take your time. I won’t walk with you.”
Without waiting for Ethan to respond, she hurried off. Ethan watched her retreating figure, then turned to look at Sebastian.
Sebastian suddenly felt a chill run down his spine. He cleared his throat, pretending as if nothing had happened. He firmly refused to admit that he might have interrupted their alone time.
Ethan looked away while adjusting his cuffs. “Don’t bother asking me about the Rodrick case.”
Sebastian came to his senses and exclaimed, “I’m sorry, man! I’ll apologize to Ava and beg for her forgiveness!”
He grew so anxious that he practically bounced around like a restless monkey.
Meanwhile, Ava arrived at the private room Ethan had reserved. She had only just sat down when the two men entered one after the other.
She glanced at them. Ethan’s expression gave nothing away, while Sebastian, who followed behind him, looked somewhat deflated.
Ava couldn’t help wondering if they had argued.
Before she could think any further, Sebastian stepped in front of her and bowed reverently. “I apologize for ruining your date with Ethan today. I’ll punish myself with three drinks later.”
Ava was startled. Why was the vice dean of the Law Department apologizing to her? That seemed way out of line.
“Not at all!” Ava waved her hands quickly. “Professor Montclair, please sit down. You don’t have to do this!”
As she spoke, she hurriedly glanced at Ethan, silently urging him to step in.
Ethan said, “Have a seat, Sebastian.”
Sebastian immediately obediently found a seat and sat down. “You’re not mad at me anymore,

Ethan formally introduced the two. “Sebastian, this is my mate, Ava. We were assigned through a forced match.”
Sebastian thought to himself, Gosh, I never expected that. How ignorant of me!
Ava still had an elective class that evening. After finishing her meal, she said to the two of them, “I have class tonight, so I’ll head off first.”
Ethan stood up as well. “I’ll walk you back to campus.”
Ava quickly waved her hand. “It’s fine. Enjoy your meal with Professor Montclair. It’ll only take a few minutes, and I can go back on my own.”
As she spoke, she opened the door to the private room, then turned to look at Ethan again. “Really, there’s no need to walk with me.”
Ethan remained where he was. “Message me when you get back, okay?”
“Okay.”
Sebastian sat in his chair, pulled out a pack of cigarettes, and opened it. He took one out, placed it between his lips, and flicked his lighter. After taking a deep drag, he slowly exhaled a ring of smoke.
Sebastian said, “Ethan, people used to say you’d never fall in love. Even if you ever got married, it would definitely be for family alliances or a contract marriage. You look gentle on the surface, but it’s actually hard for anyone to get close to you. I just didn’t expect that once you got into a relationship, you’d be like this.”
Ethan returned to his seat and corrected him, “We’re in a forced match, not a normal relationship.”
Sebastian paused, then let out a soft laugh. “Why do you keep reminding me that it’s a forced match?”
As he spoke, he pulled another cigarette from the pack and offered it to Ethan. “Want one?”
Ethan waved him off.
Sebastian took a few hard drags. When only half the cigarette remained, he stubbed it out in the ashtray.
“When did this forced match happen?” he asked. “When we met in winter, you didn’t mention
