Felix’s lecture held Ava’s full attention from beginning to end. He taught in a way that drew people in effortlessly. Each painting in his presentation became a doorway, and with steady patience, he revealed the story behind it piece by piece. The class did not feel like a lesson in art appreciation. It felt more like the past itself was speaking, as though forgotten fragments buried by time were slowly rising back to the surface.

About halfway through, Felix lifted his glass and took a drink. “Let’s take a short break.”

Only then did Ava remember Ethan. I forgot to message him. She immediately opened her Holoband and sent him a text.

During the break, one of the students went up to the podium carrying a draft of a calligraphy painting and quietly asked Felix for guidance. They spoke in low voices for a while.

From where she sat, Ava noticed the awkward smile that flashed across the boy’s face before he came down from the front. Even so, he tried hard to keep himself looking calm.

When she looked up, she found Felix already watching her. After meeting her gaze, he slowly left the podium and walked toward the first row.

“Ava, why did you choose this elective?”

The question caught her off guard. She had not expected him to notice her at all. Straightening at once, she answered, “I like painting, so I chose your class. Even though this is only the first lesson, I already feel honored to be here. You know so much.”

Felix looked at her evenly. “Getting credits in my class isn’t easy. You know that, don’t you?”

Ava smiled. This old man is direct.

She answered, “I heard people talk about it, but I still picked it. I like it.”

Very few students ever admitted that so plainly. Felix seemed faintly amused. “You’re honest. Have you studied painting before?”

“A little,” Ava replied, instinctively touching her nose. “My mentor told me my work had technique but lacked soul. After that, I stopped learning.”

Felix smiled at her response. “Since you like it, you can come sit in on lectures in our department whenever you’re free.”

Ava’s eyes brightened at once. “Really, Professor DuPont?”

“Of course. I’ll have Troy send you our class schedule. You can compare it with your own and come whenever it suits you.”

As he spoke, he motioned to the male student from earlier. “Troy, come here.”

Troy Dudley rose the moment he heard his professor call him. He walked over, obviously nervous, his face already tinged red. He was so flustered that his arms and legs nearly moved in the same direction, drawing laughter from the students around him. His face turned even redder.

Felix instructed, “Send Ava a copy of our schedule later.”

Troy’s face stayed flushed as he replied, “Yes, Professor DuPont.”

Ava studied the boy standing before her. He was not especially tall, and beside the others, he looked a little thin and fragile. Still, his eyes were clear, and there was something gentle and harmless about him.

She raised her Holoband. “Then let’s add each other. That way, you can send it to me.”

Troy froze for a second, stunned. His eyes widened. “You want my contact?”

Ava gave him a small nod. “How else are you going to send me the schedule?”

Troy hurriedly brought up his own Holoband. His fingers fumbled a little before they finally added each other. With his face still burning, he spoke again, “I’ll… send it to you after class.”

He paused, then added in a rush, “My name is Troy Dudley. If you ever want to sit in on our major classes, you can message me first.”

Ava nodded. “Okay, Troy.”

Troy returned to his seat in a daze. Even after sitting down, he kept staring at the new contact on his Holoband as if he could not believe it was real. Oh my God! She actually added me!

Lately, Ava had become a familiar name on the school forum. People widely recognized her as the prettiest girl in the Agriculture Department. Even students from quieter, less popular majors like theirs had heard of her.

The boy beside Troy gave him a sour look from head to toe and muttered under his breath, “Seriously? Why would she add you? Just because Professor DuPont picked you? That’s ridiculous.”

Another complaint followed right after. “Professor DuPont is way too biased. We’re in the same major, so why didn’t he call me over?”
