Chapter 352 Old Wounds, New Tensions
Ava immediately regretted what she had said. “Sorry… Queenie.”
Queenie gently returned the photograph to its place. “It’s fine.”
Her voice was calm, as if the matter had already passed.
After a brief silence, she spoke again.

“I’m orphaned by war. When I was very young, the city I lived in was attacked by mutants. My parents.. and the rest of my family all died in that disaster. I was the only one who survived.”
Her expression remained composed-almost too composed.
However, Ava felt a chill creep down her spine.
“Queenie…” She hesitated, then said softly, “You’ve grown into such an incredible person. If your parents could see you now… they’d be proud.”
Her gaze drifted once more to the family photo.
“I’m an abandoned child,” Ava continued quietly. “My grandfather found me and raised me. I’ve never met my parents… I don’t even know what they look like.”
Queenie studied her for a moment, then reached out and gently patted her head.
“You’re a good girl. If your parents left you behind… something must have happened. Otherwise, no one would willingly abandon their own child.”
It was a simple exchange, but it closed the distance between them in an instant.
Queenie’s gaze softened. “Your grandfather raised you well.”
Ava nodded, her voice turning faint.
“He’s the best grandfather in the world… but now, he’s gone too”
Queenie stepped forward and pulled her into a light embrace.
“Even if the world treats you harshly, you still have to believe the future will be kind.”
Ava returned the hug.
“Mm… I believe that too.”
They stayed like that for a moment before letting go.
After chatting a little longer about mutants, Ava finally returned to her room.

Since it was Malory’s first time attending, she couldn’t help but glance around curiously as she stepped into the activity room with Ava.
It was quieter than expected.
Only a handful of people were present-just as the rumors had said.
More members trickled in one after another.
Preston spotted Ava almost immediately and made his way over.
“Hey.” Ava gave a small nod. “This is Malory Rayner. Thanks for letting her join.”
“It’s nothing,” Preston speaks with a casual wave. “Since you asked, it was just a small favor.”
Malory stepped forward with a polite smile. “Hi, I’m Malory. Ava’s friend.”
Only then did Preston give her his full attention, returning the smile. “I’m Preston. If you need anything, just let me know.”
At that moment, the door swung open.
Cole walked in, hands in his pockets, completely at ease.
The instant he stepped inside, his gaze landed on Preston chatting with two girls.
He rolled his eyes.
