Chapter 185
She’d said everything she needed to say. From now on, whatever happened with the Powell family and Victor had nothing to do with her
Meanwhile, at Powell Manor, Albert was listening to the same recording over and over again. His face kept changing from dark red to pale as his anger built up. “Get that worthless son of mine back here right now!” he shouted.
‘So this is what I threw Serena away for. I even destroyed the engagement with the Aniston family for this piece of trash. I must have been completely blind!‘ Albert thought.
The butler could tell Albert was truly furious this time. Victor had been causing one disaster after another lately, and if this kept up…
“I’ll go get Mr. Victor Powell right away, Mr. Powell,” the butler said respectfully.
Victor rushed over from the hospital, looking slightly annoyed. “Dad, Ellie’s in a delicate condition right now and needs care. Couldn’t you just tell me whatever this is over the phone?”
Albert let out a cold laugh. Hearing how affectionately Victor talked about her, he pressed play on the recording.
“That idiot Victor is even helping me raise my kid!” Luther’s smug voice echoed through the room.
Victor’s expression froze completely.
“Listen to this. You gave that woman your heart, but she never respected you. She just saw you as a sucker,” Albert said, his voice dripping with mockery. After all his years dominating the business world, he couldn’t understand how he had ended up with such a stupid son.
“This can’t be real. This has to be fake,” Victor said. He’d spent the entire day trying to convince himself that since things had turned out this way, he needed to step up and take responsibility for Eliza.
But in an instant, all of that crumbled like a house of cards. Even the child he’d felt so guilty about the night before didn’t share his blood.
“You need to think long and hard about this. As for Eliza,” Albert’s eyes turned ice cold, “she’s the first person in all these years who’s dared to play me like this. I’m not going to let her off easy.”
Victor collapsed to the floor like all the strength had been drained from his body. He didn’t want to think about anything else. He just kept looking back at the past year. ‘What have I been doing with my life?‘ he thought.
He’d thrown away an amazing wife and the happy, stable home they’d built together, all for a con artist like Eliza. But Victor’s regret came too late. The Aniston family alliance was gone, and Serena, who’d once loved him with all her heart, would never be his again.
“You’re staying home for the foreseeable future. If I find out you’ve gone to see Eliza again, I’ll act like I never had a son,” Albert warned, slamming his hand on the table.
Then, he called his butler over to make arrangements. He wanted his people to track down Eliza and teach her a lesson, and he told the PR department to get ready to release the evidence.
‘This works out fine,‘ Albert thought. As long as he could spin Victor as some poor guy who got fooled by love, maybe he could save what was left of Powell Group’s reputation. That was just how the world worked.
Victor obviously wouldn’t go back to Eliza now. She’d turned herself into a complete joke.
The butler “escorted” him to his room, where the old family portrait Albert had forced them to take was still hanging on the wall.
Serena stood beside him in the photo, her smile gentle and warm. No matter when Victor looked at it, she always seemed soft but strong. He instantly broke down and grabbed his head in his hands.
