Xavier couldn’t tell which of the two, father or son, was lying. He got to the point. “Mason wants to go to Mount Ardwood with us for the weekend after school, but Leona won’t let him. You should go home and talk to her.”
Marcus frowned. “What’s Leona up to?
Alright, I get it.”
“When Mason gets out of school, bring him to the Beltran’s mansion.”
“If you and Leona are coming, drive your own car.”
“Alright, I got it.”
Xavier hesitated for a moment, but didn’t ask about Josephine before hanging up.
Even if he asked, Marcus wouldn’t admit it
anyway.
That afternoon, after Mason got out of school, Marcus dropped him off at the Beltran’s mansion. The moment Mason walked in, he shouted:
“Uncle, I’m here! Uncle, I’m here!”
Xavier rubbed his forehead, thinking it would be better if he and Aveline had a daughter in the future.
Mason rushed over to hug Xavier, looking up at him with a cheeky grin, seeming to really admire his uncle.
Xavier patted his head and said calmly, “Good, you’re here. We were just waiting for you. Let’s go.”
Mason shouted, “Okay, let’s go!”
The family went out to the car. Brielle didn’t see Leona and asked Marcus, “Aren’t you and my sister coming?”
Marcus replied to her, “Your sister’s busy. We’ll see if she wants to go later, and we’ll drive over then.”
Xavier glanced at Marcus, said nothing, and got in the car.
Valentina rode with her parents in one car. Mason wanted to ride in Xavier’s car, and without asking, he just climbed right in.
Seeing this, Xavier said, “Go sit with your maternal great–grandfather and your grandma.”
Mason immediately put on a pouty face. “Uncle, don’t you like me?”
Xavier: “…Alright, you can stay here.”
Mason immediately beamed and said intentionally, “I knew you were just teasing me, Uncle.”
Xavier said flatly, “Mason, the older you get, the more you’re like your dad.”
“My mom says that too, but I want to be like
you, Uncle.”
Xavier figured he’d better stop talking to the kid, because he never knew what the boy would say to leave him speechless.
But Mason wasn’t about to let him off the hook. He said, “Uncle, my dad and mom had a fight, that’s why they’re not coming with us to Mount Ardwood.”
“My dad originally said we’d all go to Mount Ardwood, but my mom didn’t want to. Since she wasn’t going, my dad felt bad about leaving her to come with us.”
Xavier: “…”
Doesn’t this little guy know you don’t air your dirty laundry in public?
As his uncle, should he be the one to teach him?
He tapped his fingers lightly on the door handle a few times, thought for a moment, and said, “Mason, the fight between your dad and mom is something you should only talk about within the family…”
Mason immediately cut him off. “I know, you don’t air dirty laundry in public. I only told you, Uncle, because you love me the most. I tell you everything.”
Xavier was taken aback.
Is this kid doing it on purpose?
Or is he just clueless?
He couldn’t possibly not know that Valentina was the one he loved the most.

Mason glanced at Xavier, and as if reading his mind, added, “And Valentina, too.”
Xavier didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. He patted the boy’s head. “Right. Uncle loves you, Valentina, and your aunt the most.”
Mason grinned, “I knew it.”
“Uncle, when I graduate from college, can I come work at your company? I think you’re way better than my dad.”
Xavier’s face stiffened slightly.
“Alright. You study hard, and if you have what it takes, I’ll consider it.”
“Don’t worry, Uncle, I’ll definitely study hard.”
Xavier turned his face to the window, thinking that no matter what, he should encourage the boy to study hard for now.
He refused to believe that he and Aveline, both so intelligent, would have a child less capable than Leona and Marcus’s, or that the would one day need Mason to take over.
Amy actually had something to report to Xavier, but with Mason in the car, it was inconvenient to speak, as it concerned Marcus and Josephine.
On the way, the three cars pulled into a gas station to let the two kids use the restroom.
Amy took the opportunity to tell Xavier, “Mr. Beltran, last night Josephine got to the bar first, and then Alex arrived. She went into a private dining room with him, and they stayed in there the whole time.”

When is the novel ending? It’s so unnecessarily long… not a single intimacy or connection just fighting and bickering from the beginning to end...
