Josephine beamed with an air of confidence as she declared, “Marjorie and I decided to take a little trip to Mount Ardwood for a few days. I’ve been mulling over the grand theme park project that’s in the works, and since my sister is the lead architect, I thought it would be a splendid idea to come and see it for myself.”

Leona, with a hint of skepticism, replied, “They haven’t even broken ground yet. There’s really nothing to see here—just an empty lot waiting for something to happen.”

A flicker of satisfaction crossed Josephine’s face. She reveled in the surprise her unexpected presence had elicited from those around her, and she maintained her bright smile, feeling quite pleased with herself.

“Well, in that case, I’ll return when there’s more to look at. I’m sure it’ll be magnificent once it’s done.”

“What a delightful coincidence to run into all of you here!” she continued, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “Such a big, lively family! It’s just Marjorie and me. Mind if we join you?”

Her gaze drifted towards Aveline and Xavier, her sister and brother-in-law. “Sister, brother-in-law, is it alright if we join you?”

Marcus, observing Josephine’s shift in attention towards Aveline and Xavier, let out a quiet sigh of relief. Perhaps, he mused, she had come to stir up trouble for them instead of him.

However, Aveline and Xavier remained as cold and unyielding as stone, their expressions betraying no hint of warmth or acknowledgment.

Amy, stepping forward with authority, addressed Josephine sharply, “This is a construction site. Outsiders are not permitted to be here. You need to leave immediately.”

Josephine’s face fell, her eyes wide with disbelief. “Outsiders? How can I be considered an outsider? Sister, brother-in-law…” Her voice trailed off as she turned to Collin and Paulina, seeking their support. “Grandpa, Grandma.”

But Collin and Paulina merely regarded her with frosty, unyielding expressions, refusing to utter a word.

Aveline, her patience wearing thin, turned to the two elders and said firmly, “Collin, Paulina, let’s get into the car.”

The elders nodded in agreement and followed Aveline without a word.

Leona, however, frowned slightly, her brow furrowing as she rebuked Amy, “How can you call her an outsider? Regardless of their different mothers, Aveline and Josephine are still sisters by blood.”

“And besides, she’s my friend,” Leona added defiantly.

“Amy, step aside,” she commanded, her tone leaving no room for argument.

Watching Leona defend Josephine so fervently, Marcus felt a surge of frustration rise within him. He could barely contain his anger, but he dared not voice it, fearing Josephine might turn her attention to him next.

Marcus, seeing the tension rising and knowing that Rupert and Lauren were visibly irritated, felt a sense of urgency to intervene. He hurried over to Leona, his voice a sharp whisper. “What are you doing? Don’t go looking for trouble now.”

Leona glared at him, her annoyance palpable. “Am I the one looking for trouble?”

At that moment, Josephine turned her gaze towards Marcus, her voice soft yet filled with uncertainty. “Brother-in-law, do you want me to leave too?”

Marcus’s heart skipped a beat, a wave of dread washing over him. He cursed himself internally, feeling as though he had stumbled into a storm of chaos he never wanted to be a part of.

Just then, Amy and the site manager approached, the latter’s expression grave and uncompromising. “This is a construction site. Unauthorized personnel are not allowed here. Please leave immediately, or I will have to call the police.”

The site manager felt a twinge of injustice himself. This site was secured with walls and a main gate, and while the guard had recognized Mr. Beltran and allowed their group through, the gate hadn’t closed quickly enough, allowing these two women to slip in unnoticed.

Leona still felt compelled to defend Josephine, but Marcus quickly pulled her aside, his voice urgent. “That’s enough. Don’t you want to remain a Beltran? Do you really want to be thrown out alongside her?”

Though Leona’s expression remained one of discontent, the sight of Rupert’s grim demeanor reminded her that Josephine was not welcome here. Reluctantly, she turned to Josephine and said, “Josie, there’s really nothing to see here anyway. It’s best if you leave for now. I’ll get in touch with you later.”

Josephine nodded, her face a mask of disappointment, feeling utterly wronged. As she turned to leave, she cast one last glance at Xavier, and then, with a heavy heart, she looked at Marcus, hoping for a sign of understanding.
