NO!I screamed, but Lucy was already dragging me backward, her fingers digging into my arm hard enough to bruise.

The iron gate exploded.

Metal shrieked as the bars bent outward, ripped from their moorings like paper. Something huge moved in the darknessa shadow so massive it blocked out the flickering blue torchlight.

Red eyes appeared. Two burning coals suspended in the black.

And they weren’t looking at the door Davelina had just disappeared through.

They were looking at me.

A sound filled the corridorhalf growl, half breathand with it came a smell. Musk and blood and something wild, something that made every animal instinct I had start screaming.

RUN!Lucy shrieked.

We ran.

Behind us, the corridor filled with the sound of splintering wood and tearing metal. The ground shook with each footfallboom, boom, boom- like a giant’s heartbeat. Getting closer. Getting faster.

Lucy shoved me toward the stairs and I scrambled up on hands and knees, my lungs burning, my vision swimming. The blue torches flickered wildly as we passed them, casting jagged shadows that seemed to reach for us with clawed fingers.

We burst through the door at the top and Lucy slammed it shut, throwing all her weight against it. Help me!

I grabbed the nearest heavy objecta bronze statue of a wolfand together we wedged it under the door handle.

Something massive slammed into the door from the other side.

The wood cracked. The statue scraped backward across the floor.

Another impact. Splinters flew.

Lucy grabbed my hand and we ran again, tearing through the servantscomidors, our footsteps lost in the drumthunder from the feast above.

We didn’t stop running until we reached our chamber. Lucy threw the bolt and we both collapsed against the wall, gasping for air

For a long time, neither of us could speak.

Finally, Lucy turned to look at me. Her face was streaked with tears and dust. Her voice came out in a whisper. He smelled you.

I stared at her.

When shewhen you two were standing there- Lucy’s hands were shaking. He smelled your scent on her. From when she hugged you before.

That’s why he- She covered her mouth. ‘Oh God. Natasha, he knows. He knows there’s someone else. Someone who smells likelike-

She couldn’t finish.

She didn’t have to.

From somewhere deep below us, buried in the stone foundations of the foress, something roared again.

And this time, it didn’t stop.

## Davelina’s POV

I stood in the darkness, my back pressed against the door I’d just shut.

The roaring outside went on and on. I could hear wood splintering. Metal shrieking. The sounds of something large and enraged trying to break through barriers that were never meant to hold it.

She got away. Please God, let her have gotten away.

My legs gave out. I slid down the door until I was sitting on freezing stone my arms wrapped around my knees.

The thin gown had ridden up around my thighs. I barely felt it.

This roomthis denwas enormous. I could feel the space around me, could sense the high ceiling somewhere far above. But I couldn’t see anything. The darkness here was absolute, total, hungry.

The only light came from abovea single narrow window near the ceiling too high and too small for anything to fit through. Pale moonlight filtered down, creating one thin bar of silver across the stone floor.

It didn’t reach me.

From somewhere in the black ahead came a new sound. Not roaring. Not growling.

Breathing.

Slow. Deep. Rhythmic.

He’s here. He’s in here with me.

My heart hammered so hard I thought it would burst through my ribs.

I’m sorry,I whispered into the dark. I’m sorry she was here. I didn’t know she would1 didn’t mean for you to-

The breathing stopped.

Silence pressed down on me like a physical weight.

Then I heard it. Movement. Something large shifting position. Claws scraping across stone.

Closer.

Please, I breathed. Please, I came willingly. I’m here now. I’mI’m yours Justjust don’t hurt her. Don’t go after her. Please.

A shape emerged from the darkness.

Massive. Fourlegged. Shoulders as high as a horse’s. Fur so black it seemed to swallow what little light there was.

The red eyes fixed on me. Unblinking.

He took a step forward. Then another.

I pressed myself harder against the door, even though I knew there was nowhere to go. The latch was on the outside. I was trapped.

This is it.

The wolfbecause that’s what he was in this form, wasn’t he? A wolf. Just wrong. Too big. Too aware. Too everythinglowered his head until

his muzzle was level with my face.

He was so close I could feel his breath. Hot. Damp. Smelling of meat and blood.

Then he did something I didn’t expect.

He sniffed.

Not me. Not my face or my chest or between my legs like I’d been warned he would.

He pressed his nose to my left shoulder. The spot where Natasha’s cheek had rested when she’d tried to hug me. Where her tears had soaked into the thin fabric of my gown.

He inhaled deeply. Once. Twice.
