Chapter 37

Fergus ‘s POV

“You heard me.” I kept my voice flat, emotionless. “Get him to the servants quarters. If he survives the night- I paused, looking back at the broken body one more time. If he survives, then God himself must favor Him. But if he dies-

1 met Lucy’s eyes. Made sure she understood.

“If he dies, you take the body to the eastern cliffs at dawn and throw it to the sharks. No burial. No ceremony. Just dispose of it. Understood?”

Lucy swallowed hard. “Yes, my Lord.”

“Good. Now get him out of here before-”

“My Lords!” A guard burst through the doorway, panting hard. His eyes were wide with urgency. “We found him! The King! He’s back in his

den!”

I felt my blood go cold.

Back in his den? Already?

‘How?” Gregor demanded. “How did He get back there?”

“We don’t know, my Lord.” The guard shook his head. “But he’s there. We confirmed visual. He’s just… sitting there. In the corner. Not moving.”

Sitting? Not raging? Not trying to break free?

That was wrong.

After a rampage like this-after all that violence, all that bloodshed-Mordred should still be in a frenzy. Should be tearing at the walls, trying to get out again, to kill more, to destroy everything in his path.

But sitting quietly?

What in the fuck is going on?

I turned back to Lucy and Davelina one last time.

“Get him out of here,” I repeated. “Do whatever you can. And pray to whatever gods you believe in that he makes it through the night.”

Then I followed the guard out of that blood-soaked room, leaving the two women to deal with the dying boy.

The walk to the King’s den felt longer than usual.

Every corridor we passed showed signs of the rampage, Blood on the walls Claw marks in the stone. Bodies-or pieces of them-being collected by cleanup crews who worked in grim silence.

Chapter 37

Gregor walked beside me, his face tight.

“What do you think happened?” he asked quietly, keeping his voice low enough that the guards ahead of us wouldn’t hear. “Why would he go

after a boy?”

“I don’t know,” I admitted. And I didn’t. It made no sense. “Maybe the boy was just… convenient. In the wrong place at the wrong time.*

“Maybe. Gregor didn’t sound convinced.

We turned the final corner, and the King’s den came into view.

It was chaos.

Guards swarmed around the entrance, weapons drawn, forming a perimeter. Workers hauled massive steel beams toward the destroyed gate, preparing to rebuild it stronger than before. Torches blazed everywhere, turning the normally dark corridor into something approaching

daylight.

And in the center of it all, directing the operation with sharp, angry gestures, was Sebastian.

“No, you idiots!” he shouted at a group of workers struggling with a particularly heavy beam. “That goes on the inside of the frame, not the

outside! Are you trying to make it easier for him to break through?”

“Sorry, my Lord!”

“Don’t apologize, just fix it!” Sebastian ran a hand through his dark hair, his face flushed with frustration. “And someone get me more chains. Heavy ones. We need to triple the locking mechanisms.”

He turned as we approached, his expression darkening further.

“Fergus. Gregor.” His voice was clipped, barely controlled. “Come to survey the damage? Or are you finally ready to admit I was right?”

Sebastian-* I started.

*Three more guards,” he cut me off, holding up three fingers. “Three more of our people, dead. And two slaves. That’s on top of the eight killed in the corridors. Eleven deaths in one night, Fergus. Eleven.”

“I know-

‘Do you?” Sebastian stepped closer, his eyes blazing. “Do you really? Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you’re still making excuses. Still clinging to some fantasy that we can fix this. That somehow, some way, Mordred will just… wake up. Go back to being the King he was.”

‘He’s still our King,” I said quietly.

“He was our King!* Sebastian’s voice rose, echoing off the stone walls. Guards and workers paused in their tasks, glancing nervously in our

direction. “Now he’s just a mindless beast that kills everything in sight! He doesn’t remember us. Doesn’t remember himself. He’s gone, Fergus.

And keeping his corpse alive is killing us.”

“That’s enough,” Gregor said sharply, stepping between us. “This isn’t theme or place for ”

“Then when is the time?* Sebastian demanded. “How many more have to die before you two pull your heads out of your asses? Ten more?

Twenty? Should we just keep feeding him slaves and guards until there’s one left?”

“What are you proposing?” I asked, keeping my voice level despite the anger building in my chest. “That we kill him? Is that your grand

solution?
