Chapter 112: No hawthorns for husband (needs proof reading)

AN: Taking a day off. See you Sunday. Happy reading.

Xiang Yu strutted back to Lian and Mei, a triumphant grin on his face as he waved the money he had swindled from Han Xin. Swindled was the wrong word. Borrowed was more like it. Xiang Yu planned to return all of his money when he returned to Zhen. After all, he was the crown prince of an entire country, so he didn’t feel bad about it.

"Let’s go get you some hawthorns," he declared, his eyes sparkling with mischief.

Lian and Mei, giggling with excitement, grabbed Baihe by the arm and pulled him along. Xiang Yu led the way to the vendor who hadn’t had many sales today. The old lady was so happy to see them. She made them from scratch just for them. Xiang Yu bought multiple sticks of hawthorns and distributed them to everyone. He was so generous that even Yi Nuo and Han Zhan received one.

Han Zhan, who usually found such treats childish, accepted it with a reluctant smile.

"Thank you, Your Highness!" they all chorused, their voices filled with gratitude.

Xiang Yu shook his head, a sly smile playing on his lips. "You should thank the general," he said, nodding towards Han Xin.

They all turned to the general and thanked him, but he stood there empty-handed, his expression unreadable. It seemed Peng Xiu bought everyone hawthorns except him.

Sure, Han Xin didn’t want anything that sweet, but it would be nice if he had been offered.

Without a word, he turned to leave, seemingly unbothered by the fact that Peng Xiu hadn’t gotten him one. Han Zhan watched his cousin’s retreating figure, a pang of sympathy tugging at his heart. He ran after him, catching up quickly. "Here," he said, offering him a bite of his hawthorn. Han Xin glanced at the bitten hawthorn with a cold expression.

With his mouth full and cheeks puffed up he mumbled, "I know you don’t normally like sweet things, but I feel you are so pitiful. Her highness is so heartless."

Han Xin’s cold expression softened and he said, "No need," with a hint of a smile in his eyes. Han Zhan nodded his head in understanding as he took another bite. He wanted to ask where they were going but he didn’t want to disturb his heartbroken cousin so he kept it to himself.

Two minutes later, Han Zhan was standing in a quaint inn. Its wooden beams and paper lanterns cast a warm, inviting glow making one feel relaxed. The innkeeper, a rotund man with a perpetual smile, bustled about, thrilled to have such prestigious guests under his roof. The two of them stood by the counter, their presence adding an air of importance to the humble inn.

"Why are we staying here?" Han Zhan asked, leaning casually against the counter. His eyes sparkled with curiosity.

"For security," Han Xin replied nonchalantly, his face betraying no hint of emotion. He had changed their plans at the last minute and with reason.

Leaning in closer, Han Zhan whispered, "He might tell your mother if he finds out about Peng Xiu. She would go to the emperor and ask for an interdict to get you married to her." freewebnøvel.coɱ

It was because of this that he hadn’t bought him hawthorns but brought something else. He approached the innkeeper and asked him, "Which room is General Han in?"

The innkeeper’s smile widened his eyes turning into crescent moons. "Your rooms are right next to each other, young miss."

Xiang Yu was a little surprised. He nodded and led the way up the stairs with the twins following closely. He handed the bamboo food basket to Mei. He could have handed it to Lian but she had the face of a little demon. It was like she was ready to pick a fight at a moment’s notice. This was why she picked Mei. Mei was after all the sweetest among them. He instructed Lian to knock on the door while he fixed her stubborn hair that was sticking out.

The door opened, revealing Han Xin with his robe loosely tied, his chest still glistening from the bath.

Han Xin didn’t mean to come to the door like this. Han Zhan had told him that it must be the extra hot water he ordered, so he opened the door without hesitation. Who would have thought it would be Princess Xiu and her minions? Lian almost dropped the food basket and Mei’s mouth fell open in shock as they stared at the sight before them.

Xiang Yu quickly closed the twins’ eyes with his hands, his gaze lingering on Han Xin’s chest. Sure, he should have been more restrained, but he stared at the powerful muscles with no shame at all. It wasn’t his reputation that would be ruined anyway.

Han Xin was clearly uncomfortable being stared at like that but he put on a cold expression and asked, "What do you want?"
