Chapter 345
She stood frozen long after Ashley and Riley left, trapped in the moment.
Only when Vivian’s call came-her friend still waiting at the restaurant-did she jolt back to reality.
Mem
After hanging up the phone and entering the restaurant, Vivian saw something off in Tanya’s face. “What’s wrong?” she asked. “Are you not feeling well?”
Tanya shook her head. “No.”
Her voice was weak, like all the life had been sucked out of her. She looked lost, drained, not herself at all.
Vivian frowned, eyes fixed on her.
Shortly after Ashley got home from dinner, she received a text message from Chase.
[Urgent matters in Glendale. I’ll have to delay my return to Belfort by two or three days after I get
back.]
Ashley read it, taking a deep breath. Her mood wasn’t great.
But she’d canceled plans herself just two weeks ago, so even if she was annoyed, she couldn’t say anything. If there was a next time…
After reading the message, she tossed her phone aside and went into the bathroom to shower.
The next morning, Ashley returned to Eternal for work as usual.
Seeing her finally back at work after being gone for half a month, Gabriel smiled, “You’re back?”
Ashley nodded. “Yeah.”
Ever since he started working at Eternal, Ashley had taken several long leaves.
When Tim said she had personal matters, he’d wondered what could take so long.
Now he figured Ashley’s leave was probably for her divorce.
She had a child with her ex-husband, and custody battles could drag on for a long time…
He just didn’t know if she’d successfully gotten divorced this time.
After chatting with Gabriel, Ashley went back to her work.
Three days later, it wasn’t Chase who called-it was his mother, Lily.
“Emily has HINI with COPD and respiratory failure. She’s in critical condition at Central Hospital. She wants to see you.”
Ashley didn’t even have time to react. As soon as it sank in, she grabbed her bag and ran out the door.
When she arrived, Linda, Jake, Lily, and the Sterling family’s butler were all waiting outside the ER.
Linda saw her approach, pursed her lips, and said nothing.
Lily remained silent too.
It was Jake who greeted her “Ashley,”
Ashley paused, didn’t reply, but asked,”What’s the situation now?”
Jake: They’re still working on her. Her condition is unknown at the moment.”
The butler, knowing she and Chase hadn’t officially divorced yet, politely greeted her as well:”Mrs. Sterling.”
Ashley listened, then nodded after a moment,
Then, the butler continued, “I’ve already contacted Chase and Sam. They bought tickets and should be able to make it back later.”
Ashley:”Mhm.”
Given the situation, Linda didn’t want to argue with Ashley, even if she disliked her.
So, after the butler finished speaking, silence fell over the emergency room once more.
The wait always felt incredibly long.
After what felt like an eternity, the emergency room door finally opened.
Ashley, Lily, and the others quickly rushed forward.
“Doctor, my Mom…”
“Doctor, my grandma…”
The doctor took off his mask and said, “We saved on her, but she’s still unstable. Her full recovery depends on her.”
