Chapter 413
Ashley hadn’t expected him to grab her hand. She was surprised.
But she didn’t dwell on it. She just pulled her hand free.”I can walk by myself,” she said coolly.
Then, without a glance his way, she headed straight for the sofa.
Chase didn’t get mad about the cold shoulder. He just gave a small smile. Once she was seated, he took the spot right beside her.

The sofas around the coffee table were huge, with plenty of open seats. Ashley noticed Chase didn’t sit anywhere else, just settled right next to her. She paused, but kept quiet. Taking a sip of her tea, she looked up at Sam, who was trying out the drums.
Chase picked up his own cup and took a sip of tea.
He set down his cup, not looking at Sam, but at Ashley. He was about to speak when her phone buzzed with a message.
Ashley glanced down. It was Gabriel.
Gabriel had sent a video, then a text. [Experts are calling it a once-in-30-years meteor shower. I hear a ton of people are camping out there tomorrow to catch it. My friends and I are probably heading over too. Just wondering if you and Mr. Reed would be into something like that?]
Ashley hadn’t really hung out with family or friends in a while. Seeing the meteor shower was secondary; just getting out, chilling, and soaking up a lively vibe sounded pretty good.
Ashley finished reading and was about to reply when she noticed Chase had subtly turned his head, peeking at her phone.
She paused, turning her head to eye Chase.
Chase saw her looking. Not an ounce of embarrassment on his face. He just offered a faint smile, pulled his gaze back, and casually refilled her coffee.
Ashley:”…”
Chase was sitting so close to Ashley, he could probably see her phone screen without even trying.
Ashley didn’t say a word, just scooted over, putting a bit more space between them. Then she typed back to Gabriel:”I’m interested.
Just then, Gabriel messaged her again. Ashley was about to reply when another new message popped up.
But this time, it wasn’t Gabriel. It was Matt.
Matt Long time no see.
Ashley had barely read it when Matt texted again:”Free tomorrow to hang out?
Ashley stared at it, paused for a beat, then typed back:”Sorry, I already have plans tomorrow.
Matt didn’t seem mad. He saw her reply and shot back quickly:”No worries. I’ll ask another time.
Ashley?…
Gabriel sent two more messages, and Ashley chatted with him for a minute before finally putting her phone down.
Chase hadn’t looked at her phone since that initial peek. He also hadn’t tried to deliberately close the gap between them. Seeing her finally put it down, he grinned. All done chatting?”
Ashley just grabbed her water, took a sip, and totally ignored him.
Chase didn’t even flinch.
Sam hadn’t even started drum lessons, but after a quick jam, he already knew exactly which kit he wanted.
Once he saw she’d decided, Chase just whipped out his card and bought it on the spot.
Money paid, Ashley was ready to head out..
Sam totally wanted Ashley to ride back with them, but she shot him down, saying she had plans tomorrow. So Sam just got in the car with Chase, while Ashley drove herself home.
Just minutes after they split up, she suddenly heard a phone buzzing from the back seat.
Chase and Sam had ridden in her car to get the drum kit earlier, so it was a no-brainer: the phone in the back was either Sam’s or Chase’s.
