Chapter 47
Twenty minutes later, Chase and Sam came. Emily ignored Chase and beckoned Sam, smiling, Sam, you’re back!”
“Great-Grandma. Sam ran to her, receiving a head rub.
Then, he went to Ashley. “Mommy.”
As Ashley hugged Sam, she smelled a faint trace of Tanya’s perfume on him. She didn’t mention it, but she gently pushed him away. Chase sat beside Emily, handing her a box. An apology gift.”
It was a rare snow tea Emily loved.
She knew it was for his absence at the hot spring resort. She snorted. “Fine. But what about Ashley? Did you apologize to her?”
Chase smiled, saying nothing while glancing at Ashley. It was a simple glance, devoid of emotion. Emily intended to stand up for Ashley and make Chase care more for her, but Ashley didn’t need it. She smiled faintly.”Grandma, the food’s getting cold. Let’s eat.”
Emily thought she was avoiding the topic.
Before, when she scolded Chase for ignoring Ashley, Ashley would always defend him. Emily sighed. “You always take his side.”
Ashley remained silent. Chase remained cold, unaffected by her defense.
It was time for dinner. Emily pulled Sam’s hand. “You haven’t had dinner with me in ages. Sit with me, okay?”
Sam nodded obediently.”Good boy,” Emily said, glancing at Chase meaningfully. Ashley knew Emily was trying to get them together. She ignored Chase and went to the dining room. She sat opposite Emily and Sam. Chase pulled out the chair beside her.
Emily was pleased. When the food arrived, she told Chase, “Serve Ashley.”
Ashley said, “No, Grandma, I’ll…”
Before she finished, Chase put a piece of pork in her bowl. Ashley paused and then said, “Thank you.”
Chase said nothing. Emily meant for him to continuously serve Ashley. So, as long as Ashley’s bowl was almost empty, he would serve her more of her favorite dishes. This didn’t mean anything; it had happened several times before.
After dinner, Chase chatted with Emily. Ashley listened, rarely speaking to or looking at Chase. Seeing this, Emily sighed.
Around 9 pm, Emily was tired and dismissed them. Ashley bathed and dried Sam’s hair. Sam noticed Ashley seemed quiet. She used to chat with him a
lot.
Seeing Sam’s thoughtful gaze, Ashley asked, “What’s wrong?”
Sam shook his head.”Nothing.” He thought he was overthinking.
Sam rolled on the bed, asking, “Mom, will you sleep with me tonight?”
Do you want me to?”
“Okay, but you haven’t slept with Dad in ages. Won’t you sleep with Dad?”
Ill go back to my place soon. Their divorce wasn’t finalized; if she stayed with Sam, Emily would make a fuss.
Leaving Sam’s room, she saw Chase in her room, working on his computer. He glanced at her. Ashley ignored him, walked to the closet, got clothes, and
went to take a shower.
When she came back, he was still typing. She sat by the bed, did her skincare routine, then read. There was no communication between them. Near midnight, Ashley felt sleepy. She turned off her lamp, and lay down. She thought she’d be sleepless since they hadn’t shared a bed in ages.
But then she thought Chase might not stay because he could go to Tanya after finishing his work. She fell asleep to the sound of typing. She slept well, feeling warm and comfortable.
She was about to get up when she felt warm breath on her ear. She was hugging someone… She froze, instantly awake. She was lying in Chase’s arms. He was holding her, his legs around hers. They were so close that she could feel his chest and hands…
She was not a bad sleeper. She remembered she was sleeping near the edge because she didn’t want to be too close to Chase. It wasn’t likely she’d rulled
imo his arms. Unless… he was used to sleeping with Tanya and he had mistaken her for Tanya
She pulled his hand away, trying to move. He tightened his hold, pulling her closer. She froze. A kiss landed on her forehead. I need more sleep
