Chapter 179: Chapter 179

The moment Mrs. Lander saw Elise, her eyes instantly welled up with tears.

"Madam... how have you been all this time?" Mrs. Lander stepped forward, reaching out to grasp Elise’s hand, but paused halfway.

Seeing Mrs. Lander, Elise was deeply moved as well.

During her five years at the Bennett Residence, Mrs. Lander had been utterly devoted to her. During Elise’s darkest, most painful moments, Mrs. Lander had been there to care for her continuously; Elise held both reliance and deep trust toward her.

Elise also knew that Mrs. Lander’s presence here wasn’t merely Dylan’s arrangement—Mrs. Lander herself had undoubtedly wanted to come.

Elise reached out and took Mrs. Lander’s hand in hers.

"Mrs. Lander, it’s been a while. How have you been?"

At those words, Mrs. Lander could no longer hold it in. Clasping Elise’s hand tightly, tears spilled down her cheeks as she looked her over closely.

"Madam, I’m doing well... I always wanted to call you, but I was so afraid you wouldn’t want to hear from me..."

Looking at Mrs. Lander, Elise’s eyes grew slightly rimmed with red as well.

"Mrs. Lander, thank you for keeping me in your thoughts. Don’t worry, I’m doing very well here. Rainport is a wonderful place to live, and I’ve grown quite fond of it."

"Yes, yes..." Mrs. Lander nodded, sniffing as she noted the healthy glow on Elise’s face. "I can tell! Madam, your complexion looks so much better than when you were back home, and your face has filled out nicely. The baby’s developing fine, right? Have you been keeping up with your prenatal checkups?"

"Mhm, both the baby and I are doing great." Looking at Mrs. Lander, a wave of warmth flooded Elise’s heart.

"That’s good then." Mrs. Lander raised her hand to wipe away her tears, only then realizing she had lost her composure. She let out a sheepish laugh. "Look at me, making a scene."

Elise smiled gently. Then, her gaze flicked over to Oliver standing nearby before shifting back to Mrs. Lander.

"Mrs. Lander, to be honest, I’m used to having you look after me. You know how things are between me and Dylan, and I plan to settle in Rainport permanently. So... would you be willing to stay with me?"

Mrs. Lander was taken aback. "Madam, you plan to settle in Rainport for good? So... you’re not going back to North City?"

Elise gave a calm nod.

Mrs. Lander froze for a moment, then instinctively glanced over at Oliver.

Oliver had been standing there, completely ignored by Elise since stepping through the door. Finding Mrs. Lander suddenly looking at him, he cleared his throat in awkward discomfort.

He looked at Elise and said respectfully, "Madam, please rest assured. Mr. Bennett knew you were accustomed to Mrs. Lander’s care, so he specifically instructed me to bring her here. He said that wherever you go in the future, Mrs. Lander will go with you."

Hearing this, delight washed over Mrs. Lander’s face. "I’m more than willing to stay with you, Madam! As long as you don’t mind having me, I’ll follow you wherever you go!"

"Good, then you’ll stay with me from now on," Elise said, her gaze turning toward Oliver. "However, I have one condition. Starting today, Mrs. Lander’s salary will be paid by me. That means Dylan will no longer be her employer; she only needs to follow my instructions."

Both Mrs. Lander and Oliver were stunned.

"This..." Oliver looked troubled. "Madam, I’m truly sorry, but I really can’t make that call."

"You don’t need to make the call. You just need to pass my message along to Dylan. If he agrees, Mrs. Lander stays. If he doesn’t, then I’ll trouble you to take her back right now."

Mrs. Lander panicked instantly. "Madam, please don’t send me away! I really want to stay with you..."

"Mrs. Lander, I want you to stay too," Elise said, looking at her with a serious expression. "But that depends on whether Dylan is willing to grant it."

Mrs. Lander pressed her lips together, turning to frown at Oliver.

Elise kept her cold gaze fixed on Oliver, a faint, mocking smile touching her lips. "If news got out that a divorced woman was still using a maid paid for by her ex-husband, how would people view me? Oliver, I’m not like Dylan. He may not care about his dignity, but I care about mine."

Oliver fell silent.

He had experienced firsthand just how sharp Elise’s tongue could be on numerous occasions. Not daring to argue, he offered a strained smile.

"Madam, I understand what you mean. But the problem is... I can’t reach Mr. Bennett right now either. How about this: could you let Mrs. Lander stay for now? Once I get in touch with Mr. Bennett, I’ll definitely pass your request along to him."

Can’t reach Dylan?

Elise’s brows knitted slightly, but she didn’t press the matter. She simply gave a flat response: "Fine. Give me an answer within a week at the latest. Mrs. Lander can stay for this week."

"Alright! Thank you, Madam!" Mrs. Lander nodded with a beaming smile. She checked the time and added, "It’s past eleven already. Where’s the kitchen? I’ll go prepare lunch."

"There’s no rush to cook. I’ve hired a housekeeper here as well. You must be tired from traveling today, so go rest first. There are three bedrooms on the ground floor—Mrs. Lander occupies one, so feel free to pick whichever of the other two you like."

"Understood! Thank you, Madam!" Mrs. Lander nodded. "I’ll go grab my suitcase first. Once I’ve unpacked, I’ll head to the kitchen to help Mrs. Lander!"

Mrs. Lander was a hard worker, and knowing she couldn’t stop her, Elise let her be.
