Walking Away While Pregnant: Dear Ex-Husband, I Don't Love You Anymore novel Chapter 189

Chapter 189: Chapter 189

In the second-floor master bedroom, Elise slowly woke up. As soon as her eyes fluttered open, she saw Jessica standing by her side.

"Doctor Sanders?"

Her head still felt groggy. Propping herself up against the sofa, Elise tried to stand, but Dr. Sanders immediately stepped in to support her.

Once seated securely, Elise glanced around the room and asked, "What happened to me?"

"You’ve been asleep for nearly two hours."

Elise touched her bump, her scattered thoughts gradually piecing themselves together.

She remembered snippets of what had happened before passing out—Dylan had returned and explained the truth behind the kidnapping five years ago. Then, they seemed to have gotten into a heated argument... until he suddenly collapsed, coughing up blood. As for anything else, her mind was a total blank.

Massaging her throbbing temples, Elise looked up at Jessica. "Did Dylan and I get into a fight?"

"Isn’t arguing a regular thing for you two?" Dr. Sanders offered a helpless smile. "Though Mr. Bennett was already carrying injuries, and his sudden collapse frightened you into a faint."

"I do remember him vomiting blood and collapsing... but there seem to be details I just can’t recall..."

Dr. Sanders gently patted her hand, her demeanor calm and voice soothing. "I checked your vitals—you were just shaken up, which triggered a mild threat of miscarriage. As for what you two fought about, I’m not entirely sure. Didn’t he lay everything out for you?"

"He..." Elise hesitated. Knowing that George’s identity and the syndicate’s affairs were sensitive secrets, she pursed her lips. "He explained everything."

"That’s between the two of you; I won’t pry. I just prescribed three doses of herbal medicine, and Mrs. Lander went to fetch and brew them."

Just then, a knock sounded at the door.

"Come in," Elise called out.

Mrs. Lander pushed the door open. "Ma’am, you’re awake! The medicine Dr. Sanders requested is ready."

"I’ll take it," Dr. Sanders said, stepping forward.

"Here you go," Mrs. Lander handed over the paper bag.

Dr. Sanders brought the meds to Elise. "These are just some herbal tonics and calming herbal pills. They are all completely safe for pregnant women. The tonics are packed with vitamins so they are good for the baby too."

Knowing it was good for the baby, Elise didn’t hesitate. "Thank you." She took the small glass bottle and drank it down in one go. The tonic was slightly bitter with a faint sweet aftertaste—not at all unpalatable.

Handing the empty bottle back to Mrs. Lander, Dr. Sanders added, "Please bring up a bowl of the white rice porridge Mrs. Clark made. She needs to replenish her energy."

"Right away," the housekeeper nodded and hurried downstairs.

Elise got up to use the bathroom, then splashed cold water on her face at the sink.

Staring at her pale reflection, she rested a hand over her heart. It felt strangely hollow—as if she had forgotten something crucial yet again. But no matter how hard she probed her memory, nothing came to light.

Stepping out of the bathroom, she found Dr. Sanders folding her throw blanket.

"Doctor Sanders."

Jessica paused, turning around. "Yes?"

Elise walked over and pursed her lips. "How is Dylan doing?"

Dr. Sanders smiled softly. "Mr. Edison just got back from the hospital and is downstairs right now. You can ask him directly—he looked like he had something to tell you anyway."

Elise nodded, glancing down at her sleepwear. "I’ll go change."

Elise changed into a loose dress. Outside, the overcast sky looked ready to pour at any moment. She threw on a loose knit cardigan, but as she reached the dressing room doorway, a sudden thought made her double back. Reopening the wardrobe, she swapped the cardigan for a slightly thicker, oversized blazer.

Dr. Sanders was waiting for her in the sitting area, where a bowl of plain rice porridge and a few side dishes sat on the table.

"Eat something first," she said with a gentle smile. "You haven’t eaten all morning, and the babies are going to protest."

"Alright." Elise patted her belly; she certainly couldn’t let her babies go hungry.

Watching Elise quietly sip her porridge, the tension in Dr. Sanders’s mind finally eased. Thank goodness the hypnosis still held.

Ten minutes later, Elise and Jessica walked downstairs, with Dr. Sanders carrying the empty tray to the kitchen.

Only Aaron was in the living room, his tall frame silhouetted against the floor-to-ceiling windows. Hearing footsteps, he turned around and met Elise’s calm gaze.

Elise stayed put, so Aaron went in alone.

Inside, the surgeon had just finished examining Dylan. Seeing Aaron enter, he said, "Good, the family is here. Make sure to note down these post-op instructions carefully..."

After giving his directives, the doctor left with the nurse.

Aaron stood by the bedside, looking at Dylan’s pale face before gesturing toward the door. "She’s here."

Dylan froze for a second, asking in a low voice, "How is she?"

Aaron quietly flashed him an "OK" hand sign. "Dr. Sanders said..."

Dylan breathed an audible sigh of relief. "That’s good. Step outside; I’ll talk to her myself."

"You two talk things out peacefully—don’t go getting into another fight. Your body can’t take another beating," Aaron warned with a heavy sigh before turning to leave.

Outside, Aaron looked at Elise. "Dylan said you can go in."

Nodding, Elise stepped into the ward, and Aaron pulled the door shut behind her.

She paused near the entrance for a moment before walking slowly over to the bedside.

On the bed, Dylan looked up at her with deep, intense eyes. Elise met his gaze, her own eyes completely serene.

"Dylan," she said quietly, "I remember during our argument this morning, you said you were willing to go sign the divorce papers right away. Does that offer still stand?"

Dylan’s breath hitched.

He looked into her calm, unbothered eyes, his Adam’s apple bobbing with difficulty.

The silence in the room grew heavy enough to hear a pin drop.

Finally, Elise got her answer—

"It still stands."
