We Want Mommy Not You Daddy (Cedar) novel Chapter 116

Chapter 116

Jonathan’s POV

I caught the credit card, humiliation burning across my face.

Standing there, rendered speechless by a sixyearold’s accusations, I watched helplessly as Cedar walked away with Oliver in her arms. The weight of my shame kept me rooted to the spot long after they’d disappeared from view.

How could you just let that ungrateful girl leave like that?!Elara’s shrill voice cut through my thoughts.

I massaged my temples, a migraine already forming. After this disaster, she’s going to come after us with everything she has,Elara continued, her voice rising with panic. Jonathan, you need to do

something!

We’ll give her back the letter and the necklace first,I said, trying to think through the pounding in my head. Then we can figure out our

next steps.

Elara’s eyes narrowed. If we return that necklace, she’ll have no connection to the Wright family anymore. We can’t give it back. Her

voice dropped to a calculating whisper as she paced the room. She’s never even seen what the real necklace looks like. We could give her any cheap imitation.A cruel smile twisted her lips. As for the real onewe’ll destroy it. I’ll make sure she never finds her birth mother.

I hesitated, not responding to her suggestion. In my mind, Cedar’s quest to find her biological parents was nothing but a fool’s errand. Twentysix years had passed without anyone coming forward to claim her. After all this time, the possibility seemed even more remote.

The necklace itself was nothing specialold, worn, with an

unremarkable design. The idea that someone could use such a

common piece of jewelry to reunite with longlost family was nothing

but a fantasy.

And yet, thinking of the determined look in Cedar’s eyes as she walked away, I felt an unfamiliar twinge of doubt.

Cedar’s POV

I carried Oliver into my apartment, juggling the cat carrier and groceries in my other hand. The silence that had haunted my place for weeks was immediately broken by Oliver’s excited chatter.

I love this kitty so much,he exclaimed, crouching in front of the carrier and gently poking his finger through the mesh to stroke the

cat’s tail. It’s too bad we can’t have pets at home.

I set the groceries on the counter and glanced over at him. Why can’t you have pets at your house?I asked casually.

Oliver carefully opened the carrier and gathered the small gray kitten into his arms. “One of my brothers is allergic to animals. He gets really scared around cats especially, so Daddy doesn’t allow pets.He reached for a packet of fishshaped treats I’d purchased and offered

one to the kitten.

The little cat, clearly tasting something delicious for the first time, licked Oliver’s cheek in appreciation.

Hey, you naughty kitty!Oliver giggled, his entire face lighting up. You’re getting your slobber all over me!

The scene warmed my heart. My apartment, cold and lifeless for the past two weeks, suddenly felt like a home again. I sank onto the sofa, watching them play.

Oliver,I said softly, how did you find that information about the

Wrights?

He nestled against my knee, his voice sweet and earnest. I always thought your adoptive parents were suspicious. They’re selfish and
