Chapter 164
Before Ridley could respond, I pulled it open only to have two small
bodies tumble forward onto the floor.
“What are you two doing here?” I gasped, looking down at Aiden and
Oliver.
“Um, just passing by,” Aiden mumbled, rubbing his nose in
embarrassment. I suspected he’d been listening to the story from
outside.
“Mommy!” Oliver cried, his eyes brimming with tears. This was the
same child who hadn’t shed a single tear when Selena had him tied
up in that warehouse yesterday, yet now he looked utterly
heartbroken.
My frustration from earlier evaporated instantly. I knelt down and
wiped a tear from his cheek. “What’s wrong, sweetheart?”
“I thought you’d never talk to me again!” he sobbed, throwing himself
into my arms. “I was so scared!”
His little arms wrapped around my neck so tightly I could barely
breathe. “Oliver, don’t cry,” I soothed, rubbing his back. “I’m right

here. I’m not going anywhere, and I still love you very much.”
Despite my earlier resolution to be firm with him after his dangerous balcony adventure, my heart melted completely. I couldn’t bear to see any child cry, especially not one I’d grown to care for so deeply.
“Shh, it’s okay,” I whispered, but Oliver only cried harder.
“Enough!” Ridley’s sharp command cut through the room like ice.
“Stop crying immediately.”
Oliver’s sobs quieted instantly, though tears continued to stream
down his face.
“Don’t speak to him like that,” I frowned at Ridley. “He’s just a child
who made a mistake. He knows better now, don’t you, Oliver?”
“Yes,” he hiccupped, “I’m sorry. I won’t do it again… Daddy, Mommy, please don’t be angry with me anymore.”
His wide, tear–filled eyes looked from Ridley to me, utterly pitiful. I wiped his tears away with my thumb. “I’m not angry, sweetheart. But remember, your sister is sleeping. We need to be quiet.”
Oliver’s crying gradually subsided to occasional sniffles. “Will you tuck me in too, Mommy? And read to me and Aiden?”

“It’s very late, Oliver. The last bus will be leaving soon…” I suddenly
realized how pathetic that sounded in this household of luxury cars
and private drivers.
Here I was, having skipped dinner to rush over and comfort these
.hildren, and now I was being asked to tuck in not one but three kids.
I felt like I’d somehow become the Sterling family’s unpaid nanny.
Ridley’s POV
I watched Cedar holding Oliver, their bodies forming a perfect
silhouette against the soft light from Aria’s room. The way they clung
to each other, the naturalness with which she responded to being
called “Mommy“-it made me feel like an outsider in my own home.
The sensation was… unsettling.
“Sir, dinner is served,” Charles announced from downstairs.
Cedar’s face brightened with obvious relief. “You children go enjoy
your dinner,” she said quickly. “I really should be heading home now.”
Her eagerness to leave irritated me. Was staying here so distasteful to
her?
“Ms. Wright, please stay overnight,” Aiden said, his usually reserved

voice uncharacteristically earnest. “It’s too late for you to travel
