Chapter 171
Aiden’s POV
I spotted Grandma and Mom walking out of the garden and motioned
for Oliver and Aria to follow me as we hurried to meet them. The
moment they reached the garden gate, my siblings rushed forward,
completely bypassing Grandma to throw themselves into Mom’s arms.
“Mommy, are you okay?” Aria immediately began examining Cedar up
and down, her small fingers gently touching Mom’s sleeve.
I noticed Mom’s uncomfortable expression as she tried to gently
disentangle herself. “Oliver, please don’t call me that…” Her eyes
darted nervously toward Grandma, clearly concerned about potential
misunderstandings.
Oliver, oblivious to social cues as usual, blurted out, “Mommy, you
look pale. Did Grandma say something mean to you?”
I winced internally. Could he be any more tactless? Grandma was
literally standing right here.
Grandma’s expression darkened as she watched her grandchildren
treat her with such suspicion. “I see how it is. After everything I’ve

done for you ungrateful little ones!” She turned sharply and strode away, her designer heels clicking against the stone pathway.
Aria’s eyes widened. “Oliver! You made Grandma leave.”
“I was just worried about Mom,” Oliver mumbled, suddenly finding his shoes fascinating. “I didn’t want Grandma to be mean.”
“Grandma wouldn’t do that,” I said quietly, though I’d been equally
concerned.
“Don’t worry, kids. Your grandmother was perfectly civil,” Mommy
assured us, her hand gently smoothing Oliver’s wild curls. “She even
gave me a gift. Now, I need to go to work with Aiden, and you two
should continue with your day.”
I followed Mommy to the car, grateful for this rare moment of privacy between us. As the driver pulled away from the Sterling estate, I studied her profile against the Chicago skyline. Something had been bothering me for weeks now, and I needed answers.
“Mommy,” I began carefully, “when you were eighteen, did you ever donate anything… personal?”
Mommy looked confused. “Donate? What kind of personal things?”

I felt heat creeping up my neck. “Genetic material.”
“What did you say?” She leaned closer, clearly not hearing my
mumbled words.
I cleared my throat. “The kind of genetic material needed to create
children.”
Mommy’s eyes widened in shock. “Aiden! Where did you learn about
that? You’re only six! What kind of people has your father been
letting around you? This is completely inappropriate—”
“I read about it,” I interrupted, my face burning. “In a book.”
Mommy stared at me in disbelief. “I’ve never donated anything like
that. Never. Aiden, you’re far too young for this conversation. I’ll get
you some actual children’s books-”
I narrowed my eyes, analyzing her reaction. My investigation had
confirmed that Mommy had no pregnancy records, yet DNA tests
proved we were biologically related. The only logical conclusion was
that we were born to someone else using her genetic material. But if
she hadn’t donated…
This mystery was growing more complex. I’d need to deploy
additional resources to uncover the truth. Only by understanding our

past could I secure our future together as a family.
Cedar’s POV
After stepping out of the car with Aiden at the Nest Design office, I
suggested he go in first while I took the back entrance. I’d decided to
maintain some professional distance from the Sterling children to
avoid unnecessary complications.
No sooner had I settled at my desk than my office phone rang. Aiden’s
composed voice came through the line: “Ms. Wright, please prepare
for a client meeting. We need to leave in thirty minutes.”
I knew that he’d only use “Mommy” when we were alone. Work meant
a formal address.
I immediately switched to professional mode. “Which client?”
