We Want Mommy, Not You, Daddy!
Chapter 186
This birthday might be my last. The doctors hadn’t been optimistic.
Every day I woke up felt like borrowed time, sand slipping through my
fingers. If these were my final months, wasn’t I entitled to find some
happiness? To do what I wanted, just once?
The cake sat before me, its frosting slightly uneven–evidence that
little hands had helped create it. I rarely indulged in sweets, but
knowing Cedar and the children had made it together… I took a bite.
The sweetness wasn’t overwhelming as I’d expected, but rather…
perfect.
When I looked up at Cedar, I noticed a small dot of frosting at the
corner of her mouth. Without thinking, I reached across the table.
“You have something…” My thumb gently brushed the corner of her
lips, collecting the tiny bit of frosting. Our eyes met for a brief,
electric moment.
Then, in a move I couldn’t explain even to myself, I brought my
thumb to my mouth and tasted the frosting. “Sweet,” I murmured, not
entirely referring to the cake.
Cedar’s cheeks flushed a beautiful shade of pink. She stood abruptly, almost knocking over her chair. “I–I should get going, Mr. Sterling.”

I smirked at her flustered reaction, rising to offer her a ride home. As
she turned, I noticed her handbag still sitting on the sofa. She’d been
clutching it nervously all evening, checking it repeatedly. What was
she hiding?
Curiosity got the better of me. I unzipped the bag while her back was
turned.
“Wait, don’t-” Cedar spun around, lunging for the bag.
I held it out of reach, and in her attempt to grab it, she tumbled
forward, crashing directly into my chest. My free arm instinctively
wrapped around her waist to steady her. The soft warmth of her body
pressed against mine sent an unexpected current through me.
Her face was inches from mine, those doe eyes wide with
embarrassment. I could feel her heart racing–or was that mine?
At that moment, Charles appeared in the doorway. His eyes widened
before he quickly averted his gaze. “Pardon the interruption, sir, I’ll…..
come back later. He retreated with remarkable speed for a man his
age.
Cedar pushed against my chest, extricating herself from my embrace.
“Please, Mr. Sterling. That’s my personal property.”

Chapter 186
But I’d already seen something interesting fall out–a small box,
elegantly wrapped. I picked it up, curiosity piqued.
This time, I caught her wrist mid–motion, the unexpected contact
making her pause. With a gentle tug, I pulled her down beside me on
the sofa, our shoulders touching, her surprised gasp audible in the
quiet room.
“A gift for me?” I murmured, close enough to catch the subtle scent of
her perfume.
“That’s not-” She pulled back, dignity reassembled. “Those are
private items.”
I opened the box anyway, revealing a deep emerald silk tie nestled in
tissue paper. Something shifted in my chest–a sensation I hadn’t felt
in years.
“A men’s tie. Your ‘private item‘?” I ran my finger along the silk.
Cedar crossed her arms, her embarrassment morphing into defiance.
“Fine. It was supposed to be your birthday present. I was going to give it to you tomorrow, but since you’re so determined to snoop…”
