Chapter 36
Aiden’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t care who she is. I’ll ask again–when are you coming home?”
“I’m not coming home right now, I declared. Then I remembered something that might scare him off. “By the way, didn’t Father assign you a pile of work? You haven’t finished it, have you? If Father finds out you’ve snuck away, what do you think he’ll do to you?‘
“If there’s punishment, we’ll both face it,‘ Aiden replied coldly before ending the call.
Aiden approached her after ending the call, and I saw she smiled at him. She even knelt down to straighten his collar! My heart sank. I needed to act fast.
I raced down the stairs as quickly as my legs would carry me. When I burst through the entrance door, I launched myself toward Mommy.
“Mommy! You’re finally back!!” I propelled myself like a rocket, nearly knocking her off–balance as I leaped into her arms.
She caught me and lifted me up, laughing, “Didn’t we agree I’d be home by 6:30? Why so anxious?”
“It’s already 6:35! You broke your promise!” I puffed my cheeks, placing my hands on my hips to show how serious I was about this five–minute delay.
She melted at my expression and planted a kiss on my cheek. “How can you be so cute?”
My heart finally settled. I rested my head on her shoulder, secretly glancing toward Aiden with a triumphant wink.
I found Mommy first, so clearly she would love me most!
I saw a flash of disappointment cross Aiden’s dark eyes before he quickly masked it. He looked up and asked in a neutral tone, “Ms. Wright, is this your son?”
I held my breath. This was a critical moment.
Mommy hesitated before responding, “Yes, this is my son, Oliver. You’re both six years old, the same age.”
Victory! I could hardly contain my smile as Mommy set me down and continued, “Oliver, this is the son of my company’s owner. He’s thirsty, so I invited him in for some water. You two can play together while I make dinner.”
Aiden and I exchanged glances, sending invisible sparks flying between us. This was war.
Mommy took both of us by the hand and led us into the apartment. Behind us, I knew Hunter and Henderson were following at a distance.
Once inside, Mommy went to the kitchen while Aiden and I sat with building blocks in the living room.
“This isn’t a place for you, Aiden,” I said angrily, keeping my voice low so Mommy couldn’t hear from the kitchen.
‘If you can be here, why can’t I?” Aiden toyed with a small block in his hand. “What do you think Father would say if he knew you’d found yourself a
mother?”
“I haven’t!” I fumed. “She’s my real mom. My Mommy!”
“Real mom?” Aiden’s eyes flashed, studying my face carefully.
I cursed internally. My brother was too cunning, trying to trick information out of me!

Chapter 36
After all the effort I’d put into finding her, I wasn’t about to let Aiden swoop in and take advantage.
I sniffed haughtily. “Yes, my real mom! Cedar is so good to me, loves me so much, and cares for me so deeply–of course I consider her my real mother.”
Aiden smirked but said nothing more, lowering his head to focus on the building blocks.
Half an hour later, Mommy emerged from the kitchen carrying dinner. The apartment filled with delicious aromas.
“Wow, Mommy! It smells amazing! I bet it tastes even better!” I exclaimed dramatically, making sure my enthusiasm outshone anything Aiden might say.
Aiden pressed his lips together, looking shy. “Ms. Wright, are you sure it’s okay for me to join you for dinner?”
