Chapter 55
But it had been forever, and she still wasn’t home. What if something bad happened to her? What if she got lost? Or what if that mean lady was being mean to her again?
I pressed my nose against the window, squinting through the darkness. Hunter stood behind me, his big hands on my shoulders.
“Is she here yet?” I asked for the millionth time.
“Not yet, little man,” Hunter answered patiently. “Your mom just texted she’s on her way.”
I didn’t like when Mommy was late. What if she forgot to come home? What if someone took her away? My tummy felt all twisty inside.
Then I saw the big black car. It was super fancy, like the ones in my picture books about rich people. And there was Mommy, stepping out of it! But she wasn’t alone. A tall man in a dark suit was with her.
“Look!” I pointed. “That’s Daddy!”
“Your daddy?” Hunter sounded surprised.
“Yes,” I confirmed. “Daddy’s coming to see Mommy again. I don’t like him being around her all the time.”
I watched as Mommy stumbled and fell. Daddy helped her up and fixed her dress. I didn’t like how close he was standing to her.
“I don’t want him near my mommy,” I declared. “When I grow up, I’m going to marry Mommy, and then she’ll never have to talk to Daddy again.”
Hunter chuckled. “That’s not quite how it works, buddy.”
Daddy was walking Mommy to our building now. They stopped under the big tree. He was touching her hair, and then his face got closer to hers. He was trying to kiss my mommy!
“No!” I shouted, scrambling down from the window. “He can’t do that!”
My brain worked super fast. Yesterday I discovered the control box for the sprinklers when I played in the garden. I knew exactly where it
was.
“Hunter! I need your help with an emergency mission!” I grabbed his hand and pulled him to the emergency exit stairs.
We raced down to the garden area. The control panel was hidden behind some bushes. I twisted the dial all the way and pressed the red button. Immediately, water shot up from the ground, aiming right at the tree where Mommy and Daddy were standing.
“Direct hit!” I whispered excitedly, watching them jump apart.

Chapter 55
“Oliver,” Hunter warned, “we should go back upstairs.”
“Wait! One more thing!” I spotted the black cat that sometimes visited our windowsill for treats, now prowling near the driveway. A wicked idea formed. “Hunter, help me with something.”

Daddy hated pets–said they were dirty and beneath our family’s status. Perfect.
I pulled a fish treat from my pocket–I always kept some for my furry friend–and while the adults were still arguing by the front door, I quietly tossed it onto the plush leather seat of the open car. Hunter understood immediately and gently guided the curious cat toward the
vehicle.
The cat, following the scent, leaped gracefully inside.
“Mission accomplished!” I declared proudly, watching Daddy’s angry face as he discovered the cat. “Now let’s go meet Mommy!”
We raced back upstairs. When I heard Mommy’s key in the lock, I positioned myself perfectly, as if I’d been waiting patiently all along.
“Mommy!” I flung myself into her arms as she entered. “You’re dress wet! What happened?”
“Just a sprinkler malfunction, sweetie,” she said, hugging me tight.
“Who was that man who brought you home?” I asked innocently.
“Just my boss from work,” she replied, brushing wet hair from her face.
“I don’t like him. I’m afraid he would hurt you.” I stated firmly. “Promise you won’t be alone with him anymore?”
Mommy looked surprised. “He doesn’t look like a bad guy.” Then she gently touched my head. “But since you’re worried, I promise,
sweetie.”
Suddenly, my special phone buzzed in my pocket. The screen showed “Daddy” calling.
“Who’s calling you so late?” she asked.
I clutched the phone tightly. “No one important,” I lied, hitting the decline button.
