So Selthia had vast, hidden reserves and resources...
She controlled three fully functional ruin’s chambers complexes in Yino. And she still commanded the chamber Sirius and Ren had just fled, a fortress they wouldn’t dare re-invade from fear of being imprisoned again by the crushing artifacts.
So she had four massive, subterranean ’laboratories’ to experiment with ancient runes and forcefully mutate her beasts.
And now, the last test of her power had arrived: seeing if the enhanced horrors hidden in the nearest Yino chamber could capture Ren, Sirius or secure more Gold rank pawns for her chessboard.
These beasts possessed a staggering level of power. Any tamer with even a fraction of Ren’s mana sensitivity could feel their oppressive auras radiating through the bedrock, even with the long detour around Yino some may have felt them.
But if they were coming as reinforcements... they were likely going to be just a few hours too late.
The beasts tearing through the ceiling were not Guardians and they didn’t carry Selthia’s chatty consciousness like the artifacts below, they were not at that level, they’d need one extra rank up...
They were simply feral.
Fast, heavily armored, and brutally strong.
And fast was the absolute worst possible trait they could possess when hunting an exhausted man who couldn’t use his spatial jumps.
Sirius simply couldn’t rip open a long-distance shadow portal.
The cost of the spell was basically suicidal. To execute a jump, he would have to physically carry Ren’s dead weight, plus the eleven living non mana born people currently tucked away inside the spatial stomach of Ren’s Wolverine.
He would have to actively coat every single one of those twelve entities in his own mana to shield them from the dimensional friction. Attempting that while somewhat drained from the earlier failed jump and fighting the corruption, and running solely on the residual fumes of Ren’s golden energy, would instantly deplete him.
The equation didn’t balance. Jumping wasn’t going to save them.
All that remained was the common, brutal, agonizing act of running uphill... Basically climbing.
Two near-Platinum nightmares, dozens of Mid and High-Gold horrors spilling down behind them.
And a battered Sirius Starweaver, dragging a half-dead teenager up the stairs.
♢♢♢♢
Down below, Selthia was still throwing a tantrum.
Furious and screaming, she forcefully commanded the two massive, long legs of the main artifact in the stairwell. It dragged its horrific, black mass upward in a jerky, almost comical display of desperate movement. She was violently trying to reposition the grotesque purple-meat-carring-tower, desperate to keep Sirius trapped within her spatial-jamming radius while continuously firing long, purple shockwaves of corruption up the shaft.
Sirius’s eyes narrowed. The world around him slowed down to a crawl.
What he was looking at right now wasn’t a military engagement. It was something entirely different, a scenario of retreat while surrounded.
