Chapter 1141: Chapter 1141 - Taming the Wall - Test

In Roran’s sector, the tense, unnatural standoff finally broke...

The first beast moved.

One of the three Gold-tier mutants, specifically, the Gold 1 monstrosity broke rank in an instant. It launched itself directly at the autonomous tower anchoring the sector, charging ahead of its two companions in a deliberate, probing assault.

The tower did not hesitate. It responded with automated immediacy.

Massive, iron-hard roots exploded outward from the blood-soaked earth. They shot forward like hydraulic spears, violently coiling around the charging beast. The wooden tendrils snapped taut, instantly and completely neutralizing the creature’s momentum.

The tower aggressively pinned the monster to the dirt, flawlessly controlling its struggling mass despite the glaring, undeniable fact that, in terms of pure mana-biological rank, a Gold-tier beast should have effortlessly crushed a Silver-tier construct.

Standing a safe distance away on the parapet, Ren observed the violent collision. He kept his expression perfectly neutral, burying his intense, analytical curiosity behind a mask of cold indifference.

Selthia wasn’t the only one fascinated by the exact mechanical limits of the towers for sure.

The wooden monoliths currently guarding the wastelands weren’t physically durable because of the raw materials they were built from. And they certainly weren’t capped at the Silver rank out of something like aesthetic sense, or because of any mana incapacity on Ren’s part.

If he truly wanted to, Ren could have constructed every single one of these towers out of hyper-dense, Platinum-tier materials. He possessed the crystal-molding techniques required to do it now. He had the architectural blueprints to carve the necessary micro-runes. He had the raw capability to erect a sprawling network of defensive monoliths that would rival the absolute greatest, most legendary fortresses of the inner city.

But practically speaking, doing so would have been an absurd, logistical nightmare. Platinum-tier materials didn’t just grow on trees, well, technically some of them did, but that entirely misses the tactical point...

Even though Ren could personally harvest high-tier materials, or even synthetically forge them in the vault, manufacturing them in the astronomical quantities required to physically cover the entire perimeter of the sister cities would have consumed lifetimes he simply did not have.

Even if he compromised and built them at the Gold rank, which was vastly more abundant than Platinum in the city vaults and market now and structurally denser than Silver, it would have demanded an insane investment of crystals, time and energy to produce the sheer volume of towers the Great Wall desperately required.

But none of those logistical headaches were the actual, foundational reason the towers were restricted to the Silver tier.

Selthia may have wanted to believe he had chosen Silver simply to match the baseline rank of the mutant swarms... But she would be completely wrong.

The real reason was the fuel.

It was the ambient mana.
