Defending the South sector was fundamentally no longer a fixed and legally unyielding obligation for Ren.
Given his staggering importance as an individual, it had only been a matter of time. Now that he officially held the title of General, and the terrifying truth of his identity was floating openly across his parapets, it made way less logistical sense to keep him permanently anchored to a single stretch of stone like a common recruit.
Officially, he existed in a bureaucratic stratosphere far above the standard military service requirements. There wasn’t a single lower commanding officer alive suicidal enough to write up the ’Glorious General’ for missing a graveyard shift.
He was, in the truest, most literal sense of the phrase, basically above the law for this.
But the long zone was still his responsibility. Whether he was standing watch in the freezing rain or sitting comfortably in the city, it was his territory.
And despite the theoretical freedom his new rank granted him, the underlying tactical nightmare remained entirely unchanged: humanity still possessed a terrifyingly small handful of Tamers actually capable of halting a Platinum-tier assault.
The ten distinct sections of the circular Great Wall absolutely had to be guarded by someone possessing the raw firepower to survive that exact level of threat.
And that "someone" was a profoundly scarce resource.
There were barely enough elite Tamers in existence to close the huge wall circle.
If one were to mentally trace the perimeter of the Great Wall moving clockwise, the geographical distribution of humanity’s supreme vanguard looked like this:
Immediately after Ren guarding the absolute Southern point, the Southwest sector belonged to Liora. Pushing past Liora, Larissa anchored the West. Then Luna secured the Northwest. Sirius held the true North, operating under the constant close overwatch for help from Selphira if needed be.
From that point onward, the territory belonged to Yino. Liu initiated their defensive line in the North-Yino sector. Taro locked down the Northeast. Victor commanded the East. Min secured the Southeast. And finally, closing the massive circle, Roran’s squad held the remaining Southern sector. Roran’s group lacked a dual-contract Tamer, but they were heavily supplemented by elite Gold squads like Mira’s, and strategically positioned to receive instantaneous, high-speed reinforcement from Ren whenever the perimeter buckled.
Hovering above this static grid, Lin and Zhao operated as a lethal, high-velocity rapid response team for the entire surface. They were fully cleared to instantly mobilize alongside Selphira, Ignatius and dozens of specialized, high-agility Gold Tamers to violently reinforce any sector threatening to breach.
And directly beneath all of them, operating in the suffocating dark, Julius and Arturo directly commanded the subterranean territory.
That massive underground front was intricately subdivided into specialized kill-zones, employing a significantly higher volume of elite Gold Tamers. The subterranean caverns were vastly wider and demanded highly specialized sensory tactics.
