"They obtained the second core through persistence and traitorous political alliances."
"And Orion," Selphira continued, her voice full of disgust that made each word sharp, "negotiated using that leverage he’d carefully saved for the best moment... The moment you ’lost the light’ and the new chamber Zhao found was known... He offered to give the second core in exchange for Lykea’s white heart. Trade one key for another."
"Sirius was furious at first when the proposal came, rage at his brother’s audacity nearly overwhelming any pragmatic decision. But Orion sweetened the deal with promises designed to exploit his desperation. Said they’d only take the heart if it was absolutely necessary to defend the city from mutants attacking. That it was to protect Luna too in his absence, guardianship disguised as necessity. That Sirius could recover it as soon as he returned from the next ruin, a temporary loan rather than permanent loss."
Ren’s fists clenched with force that made his knuckles crack audibly.
"And Sirius accepted then?"
"Not without doubts... but he accepted in the end," Selphira confirmed bitterly, the words tasting of defeat and desperate choices made when all options were bad. "Because he had hope that the new ruin for the third core would be similar to the other two already explored. That it would follow the same pattern he’d observed before. That he could enter alone to verify quickly and return for resources, before overcoming the trials, obtaining what intel he needed and therefore returning in one or two days maximum..."
"He planned then to use his last resources to bring a complete army back for the real excavation. Obtain sacrifices for the door if necessary, whatever was required to overcome the trials quickly and being able to take Lykea’s heart from Orion before it could be used too many times. Before too much wear became irreversible damage."
"He was convinced it was that type of ruin," she continued with tone suggesting Sirius’s certainty had been both correct and tragically insufficient, "because the color of the claw tree at the entrance was exactly the same as the initial hidden entrance where they’d fought the dragon wolf years back. Same ancient architecture down to the smallest details. All signs pointed to it being connected, part of the same system."
"And he was right," she said with bitter irony that made the correctness feel like a curse, "through pure luck. Because it turned out the artifacts like the one in that ruin were eight in total. Those eight that the mutant monsters used to attack us, eight locations we’re still mapping. Which means there are more ruins still unknown, more places with ancestral secrets nobody has found yet."
"Sirius should have returned the next day according to his plan... But something went wrong."
Her expression became shadowed with concern that hadn’t faded despite a year’s passing.
"For some reason we still don’t completely understand, Sirius ended up frozen in one of those trap doors like the ones that crystallized Lykea and Lyzea. A door he supposedly knew well because it was similar to those from the first ruin he’d explored. A door that shouldn’t have trapped him given his experience and knowledge."
"And as you know, he’s been there since then. Frozen in crystal... Unable to move or communicate with the outside world. While Orion and his brothers pretend to use Lykea’s heart as a weapon for city defense. While Luna grows up without her father to guide or protect her. While everything Sirius tried to protect slowly crumbles under the weight of politics he can’t influence from his crystalline prison."
Selphira looked at Ren directly with an intensity that demanded he understand the full weight of what she was revealing.
