And now...
Now it was Klein’s turn to face the immovable wall.
♢♢♢♢
LESSER DEEP TERROR
Klein walked onto the field with crystal-clear expectations about how this would end.
He would lose. Probably quickly. The question wasn’t whether he’d lose but how long he’d last before it happened.
Taro manifested his beast with a casual gesture...
It wasn’t the golden beetle.
Klein blinked in genuine fear, his breath catching.
He’d seen this creature many times before but couldn’t get accustomed to its appearance no matter how many times he witnessed it.
The creature that materialized was fundamentally different from everything you were accustomed to seeing on the surface. Dark where the beetle was brilliant and golden. Articulated in a disturbingly exaggerated manner that seemed wrong. With hairy legs... so many legs extending at angles that didn’t seem natural for any living thing.
The Lesser Deep Terror.
The beast Taro had grown fond of deploying more frequently lately.
At Gold 1 rank, it was no longer the small creature that Min had mocked to annoy Taro with jokes about long noses and strange appearance.
Now it was a genuine threat that commanded respect.
And Klein felt something cold settle in his stomach while observing it materialize completely in the afternoon light.
And he wasn’t alone in his discomfort... Most adult nobles knew about the deep assassins from personal experience. At some point in the past they would have descended to Bronze-rank depths and explored portions of the caverns. But in large groups and with many relatively strong people, the assassins didn’t approach closely.
Seeing them from a distance, their silhouettes in the darkness was one thing. But seeing them this large in broad daylight was a fundamentally different experience.
And the number of people capable of descending to Gold rank, or even Silver rank in the deep caverns was extremely limited. Even now that Ren had improved the mines’ situation dramatically, the assassins had become more commonly encountered for many... but seeing them distorted through living crystal walls wasn’t the same as this direct ’confrontation’.
At this enormous size, covered in bristling hairs and countless legs, trailing sticky threads and bearing those strange lifeless eyes...
Klein swallowed hard against rising dread.
Because he understood immediately that this would be different from facing the beetle in many ways.
The beetle was powerful through straightforward means.
Overwhelming physical strength.
Impenetrable defense.
Speed and flexibility that shouldn’t exist in a creature so massive.
But it was relatively simple in its approach, easy to understand tactically. It crushed opponents with physical superiority and that was that.
The Deep Terror...
The Deep Terror was a tactical nightmare made manifest.
Most people had considered years ago that this species’ potential was suboptimal at best. Even slightly higher than truly mediocre beasts, it was still classified as poor choice for serious tamers who wanted optimal development.
Therefore, even its specific eggs held poor value in the market. Nobody wanted them when superior options existed.
Those legs...
The ones not serving as giant "morning stars" striking with devastating force thanks to articulated segments that accumulated momentum through the swing... served as powerful spears. Capable of penetrating defenses that would stop many other attacks completely.
What more could the beast possibly ask for in terms of capabilities?
Absorption ability almost as effective as Liu’s vampire? The Deep Terror possessed it.
Paralyzing venom delivered through the proboscis and spear legs? Also present.
Agility and speed that defied its massive size? Of course it had that too.
Taro’s beast had everything necessary to dominate opponents.
And Klein, watching it deploy its legs completely in preparation for battle...
Knew he had no real chance of victory.
The realization settled over him like a heavy weight.
This wasn’t like facing Feng and Astor where skill and better methods could overcome power difference.
This was facing a creature that had everything, power, versatility, defense, speed, piloted by someone who’d mastered Ren’s techniques way longer than Klein had.
The Deep Terror moved forward on its many legs with disturbing fluid grace.
Each step placing a chitinous limb precisely where it needed to be. The body remaining level despite the complex coordination required.
It was mesmerizing to watch in a horrible way.
