The transformation of the terrain was so extensive it seemed like a beast of far superior rank had executed the technique instead of a creature still at Silver 3.
It was a demonstration of exactly what it meant to have elemental control twice as refined as Ren’s other beasts, and ten times more than a specialized wolverine of the same rank. The ability to manipulate the environment at a scale that vastly exceeded what the rank would suggest.
Was that really just double the power?
And in the next instant a huge part of the ground turned "inside out", the molten earth got buried and a new stone stake emerged...
The wolverine emerged from the tip of the spike now closest to the wisp, rising from the shadow cast by the structure as if darkness itself were a door it could traverse at will.
It had used the field it created not only as defense but as a transportation network that gave it instant access to any shadow in the area.
Every stake was a potential exit point. Every shadow a doorway.
The wisp had no time to react.
One moment it was recovering from its explosive mana expenditure, the next the wolverine was simply there, its compact yet massive form materializing from the shadows with its short range elemental control already in motion.
The wisp tried to escape.
But it was too late.
The wolverine had timed its emergence perfectly, exploiting the moment when the wisp had exhausted its readily usable energy, maintaining intangibility was the max it could do now.
And even spiritual energy had limits. Even wisp couldn’t remain incorporeal indefinitely, nor while channeling other techniques.
The wolverine sprayed the wisp with what some called "blessed water", a combination of water elemental energy and light that was particularly effective against spirits touched by miasma or demonic energy.
The wisp shrieked, a sound that had no physical source but nonetheless rang through the arena, as the blessed water contacted its form. Steam erupted where water met fire, but the spiritual beast used its last resource and became intangible once again.
And before the spirit could escape, the wolverine enclosed it in a black sphere that materialized around both the wisp and the water like a perfect cage.
It was a combination of earth and darkness, physical structure reinforced with shadow manipulation that sealed light escapes in all directions. The sphere was opaque, absorbing rather than reflecting illumination. From the outside, it appeared as a perfect void hovering above the ground, roughly three meters in diameter.
Inside, the wisp was trapped with the blessed water still clinging to its untouchable form, yet unable to teleport or phase through the barrier.
A very weak barrier...
But Ren smiled, he knew the wisp couldn’t remain intangible for more than a few moments, perhaps three or four seconds maximum before its spiritual energy began to disperse dangerously.
And if it remained intangible too long, it would damage itself as the cohesion maintaining its form eroded, eventually disintegrating if pushed beyond the safety limit. It was a fundamental limitation of spiritual beings, their flexibility came at the cost of stability. Push the incorporeal state too far and they simply ceased to be.
It could break the barrier with almost any attack, but as soon as it materialised trying that the water would kill it...
So for a moment, nothing happened visibly externally.
