Chapter 5
## Chapter 5: She’s Got a Marriage Certificate
“Hubby?”
Old Mr. Lewie’e voice boomed with vigor, cutting clearly through the phone. Britney saw Camren’s bro furrow, and he reached out a hand to her, wiggling his fingers slightly. Without thinking, almost instinctively, she obediently placed her phone in his waiting palm.
“Sweetie, sweetie, can you hear me?” She could still hear Old Mr. Lewis’s impatient voice.
Camren took the phone. Without a word, he ruthlessly hung up, then slipped the cell into… his own pocket.
What is he doing? Britney stared at his still perfectly creased suit pants after he’d pocketed the phone. “Is
that…”
“Let’s go.
*Go? Britney’s eyes widened. In just a few short minutes, she’d already been shocked countless times. Her brain felt like it was on a completely different wavelength than Camren’s. “Where?”
“Aren’t we getting married?” he retorted, matter–of–factly.
Britney nodded, Right, that was the plan. Old Mr. Lewis had just told her Camren agreed to the marriage, but she hadn’t expected him to appear before her so quickly.
Then let’s go.” Camren glanced at the custom watch on his wrist. ‘We can still make it to the City Hall now.”
“Now?” Britney blinked her big eyes.
“Do you have other plans?”
Britney shook her head. No, she really didn’t.
“Then it’s now.” This time, Camren didn’t give Britney any more time to think. He simply took her wrist and led
her to the Luxury Sedan.
After they got in, Camren released her hand, Britney felt a little awkward and covered her wrist with her other hand, as if his body heat still lingered there. His hand was much warmer than she had imagined.
Camren seemed incredibly busy. Even in the car, he was constantly on the phone, arranging work, his brow subtly furrowing as if he was highly dissatisfied with the efficiency of the people on the other end. Just a single, drawn–out “Hmm?” could make you feel the chill emanating from him.
Britney instinctively pulled back her hand and sat up straight. She began to reconsider whether she really wanted to marry Camren.
Britney didn’t mull it over for too long, because Camren’s efficiency was remarkably high. By the time they
arrived at the city hall, someone was already waiting for them.
Mechanically, Britney pulled out her ID card and signed her name on a series of documents, then recited the
path.
And then she held a marriage certificate.
She stared at the two names printed on it, and the official seal symbolizing national recognition. She was stunned “Just like that, they were married?”
She and Ryan had been together for many years. They understood and supported each other. From when they first talked about marriage until now, nearly a year had passed, and they were only just getting to the stage of choosing a wedding dress.
But she and Camren… they barely exchanged a few words, and now they were married?
Before Britney could fully process it, the marriage certificate was gently taken from her hand.
Camren skillfully tucked both certificates seamlessly into his suit jacket pocket. Only then did he turn to ask. I’ll keep them?”
“Uh–huh…” Britney nodded obediently. They were already put away; her opinion didn’t seem to matter much anymore. Besides, they were married now – it probably didn’t make much difference who held the certificate
anyway.
“Where are we going now?” Britney had to tilt her head slightly to meet Camren’s eyes,
“Do you have somewhere you want to go?” Camren’s voice was typically aloof, but his tone carried a hint of gentle inquiry. “Do we need to celebrate? Candlelight dinner, or would you like flowers?”
Clearly, Camren didn’t have a very specific plan for what came next.
Britney thought for a moment before tentatively speaking. “If it’s okay, Mr. Lewis, could you come with me to
see someone?”
“I want to tell her the news about my marriage in person.”
“Address,” Camren agreed.
Britney gave him an address. Camren paused slightly but didn’t press for details. He simply instructed the driver to turn around and head to the address Britney had provided.
An hour later, Britney and Camren arrived at the suburban cemetery.
Britney still held a bouquet of sunflowers she’d bought on the way. She slowly knelt down, placed the flowers. in front of the tombstone, then gently brushed away the dust from the photo on the grave marker.
The photo showed a kind–looking elderly woman whose face was covered in wrinkles, but her eyes were curved into a smile. One look and you knew she was a loving elder.
“Grandma, I’m here to see you. Britney’s voice was very soft, carrying a rare hint of girlish affection.
“I have some big news to tell you.
“Don’t be too surprised, okay?”
“I got married! We just registered “
“But it’s not to Ryan, it’s to…” Britney secretly peeked at the man behind her, then continued, a little awkwardly, “It’s Ryan’s uncle, Camren Lewis.”
“You’ve met him, you even mentioned how capable and smart he was, remember?”
Britney knelt before the tombstone, chattering away as if she had found a beloved elder to confide in. Camreni didn’t interrupt, simply standing by her side.
It wasn’t until the sun began to set and a cool breeze swept through that Britney stood up. But she’d been squatting for too long, and her legs felt numb for a moment, causing her to almost lose her balance. Luckily, Camren quickly supported her by the waist, though he withdrew his hand just as fast.
“Thank you.” Britney suddenly remembered that Camren didn’t like physical contact.
Just as she was thinking this, Britney’s shoulder suddenly felt heavy. A jacket, still warm, was draped over her, and his low voice drifted to her ears on the wind, “Old Mrs. Simpson treated you very well?”
“Yes,” Britney nodded. “She was the only one who ever truly cared for me.”
A faint, wistful smile touched her lips. Grandma was probably the kindest person in the entire Simpson family when it came to her.
She still remembered when she first returned home; everyone in the Simpson family looked at her with complicated emotions a mix of awkwardness and unfamiliarity. Only Grandma rushed to embrace her as if she had found a lost treasure. Her aged hands gently stroked Britney’s back, repeatedly whispering. “My Britney suffered so much, suffered so much.”
Later, Britney learned that during the fifteen years she was lost, the Simpson family had considered giving up the search more than once. Only Grandma insisted on finding her, never giving up hope.
Britney didn’t know if it hadn’t been for Grandma’s persistence, would she still be wandering out there, and what would her life have become?
She only knew that Grandma truly loved and worried about her, even holding her hand until her dying breath.
