Chapter 183

Magnus Hale

How can he carry such absurd strength?

Why did he choose me?

There are so many questions, but I have no intention of talking to

him to get answers.

A quick noise cuts through my line of thought: footsteps approaching

in a sprint. Instinct claims it’s Adrian, but the figure that appears

makes my breath catch for another reason.

Darius? It comes out of my mouth in a tone that mixes surprise and

suspicion.

The man stops before the bars, his gaze heavy with haste and worry.

Boss, I came to see you. I have little time before that bastard comes

back.

I approach the bars; the question comes automatically.

What happened?

The answer arrives dry, without beating around the bush.

That damn kid killed Rocco.

Incredulity cuts like a blade. Rocco had been one of my bestbrute

force and calculated loyalty.

How?It comes out almost without a voice.

Darius stares at the floor for a second and then lets it out.

He broke his neck. Twisted it in a way no one’s neck should twist.

My blood boils; rage explodes through my entire body. I am truly

pissed off: he was one of my best soldiers, someone with iron loyalty

who always covered me and followed orders without hesitation.

Darius doesn’t hesitate. He moves closer to the bars and speaks fast.

I have to go, boss. He ordered that no one approach you and warned

that anyone who wants to receive drugs will have to keep their

distance.

The fury grows, a swift flame. Touching my merchandise is a direct

affront; it’s fire in the market, it’s war. I lift my head, forcing my

breathing to settle. I can’t show weakness, not now.

Is that son of a bitch messing with my goods?I ask, my voice more

contained than I’d like.

Darius nods, hesitating to look too much at me.

Everyone saw, boss. The scene in the hallway: they spread it through

the whole prison. They saw you being carried in that boy’s arms like

you were a bride, and now everyone obeys him. What they saw was

the image of the Enforcer defeated, weak.

Shame consumes me like acid, burning every part of me. My face

stings, my hands shake, and swallowing my pride is like suffocating

on glass shards. Darius notices and tries to soften the blow.

Don’t carry this as a failure, boss. That kid is a monster; his strength

is beyond normal. If even Rocco fell, there’s no dishonor in you

having lost.

A solitary laugh escapes me. That defeat still bugs me.

I should have beaten him. I don’t accept this.

Darius makes a gesture, as if weighing the options.

Boss, the best thing you can do is obey him.The statement comes

direct and blunt.

I give a short, bitter laugh.

Me obey that son of a bitch? Never.

He sighs heavily.

How are you going to recover if you don’t spare yourself a little?

I shut my mouth; the rage throbs. As much as it revolts me to admit

it, he’s right.

What if you pretend to win his trust?Darius continues, his voice
