Kala swallowed the lump in her throat, forcing her voice to remain steady. “Josephine had Noelle confined to the family chapel for hours of forced reflection a few days ago as punishment. Finnian completely ignored his grandmother’s fury and carried Noelle out of there himself. He holds all the cards in the Sanders Conglomerate right now. Even if Josephine tries to stop him, he couldn’t care less.”
Jane felt like the floor had dropped out from under her. If the matriarch of the family couldn’t even put an end to this sick affair, who could?
“But Noelle married the eldest son! She was supposed to be in love with Rafael. Why is she suddenly throwing herself at Finnian?” Jane was still reeling, convinced there was a darker, uglier secret beneath it all.
Kaia stared blankly out the hospital window. Honestly, that was the one piece of the puzzle she couldn’t quite figure out herself.
For six years, Kaia and Noelle had maintained a friendly, trusting relationship as

Kaia’s head snapped up. Her mother’s words hit her like a lightning bolt, illuminating the dark, confusing corners of the situation.
Noelle didn’t just want Finnian’s devotion. She wanted the crown.
“That woman’s ambition is terrifying,” Jane sneered. “I never saw it in her before. Over the years, she came over to our house for dinner so many times. She was always so sweet, so friendly, and acted like she cared about you. How does a woman lose her husband and instantly pivot to shamelessly wrecking your life?” Jane was straightforward to a fault, and right now, she wanted notes more than to scream at the top of her lungs.

life.
Whoever had the audacity to try and destroy that–Jane didn’t care how powerful they were–she would make them pay.
“Kaia, listen to me. Do not act on impulse. Even if you divorce him, you make sure you take every single thing you are owed. You do not let that homewrecker get off easy.” Jane knew her daughter’s personality. Kaia didn’t care about money or status; she only cared about her medical research and her career. Jane was terrified Kaia would just quietly step aside and hand the victory to Noelle.
Seeing her mother this furious on her behalf filled Kaia with a crushing wave of guilt.
“Mom, don’t worry. The divorce is happening. But right now, Brynlee’s health is the priority. I talked to Dr. Kendrick, and he said Brynlee’s surgery has to wait until she’s at least seven or eight years old.” Kaia massaged her throbbing temples. She was completely trapped, and it was suffocating.
Jane looked at her granddaughter, whose little face was flushed and breathing strained. Her heart ached just as much.
“If there weren’t a child involved, you could just sign the papers and walk away. But with Brynlee… you can’t just cut ties cleanly. A child is the anchor that keeps a woman tied down,” Jane sighed heavily.
After a round of meds and an IV drip, Brynlee finally started to improve by the next morning. When her fever broke, she huddled under the blankets, looking small and terrified. Kaia knew. how much her daughter hated hospitals, so she sat quietly beside her, not wanting to overwhelm her.
Kala looked at the medical chart hanging at the end of the bed, and old memories drifted into her mind.
When Brynlee had gotten sick at a year old, Finnian had taken a red–eye flight back from another city and sat by her bed for three days and three nights. A man who was famously obsessed with his appearance hadn’t even bothered to shave until she was cleared to go home.
Looking back, his panic had been genuine. His love for their daughter had been real.
By the afternoon of the seventh day of the holidays, Brynlee’s condition finally stabilized. The gaps between her fever spikes grew longer, and Kaia and her parents finally breathed a sigh. of relief.
“Mommy, I had a really, really long dream… and when I woke up, you were here. I’m so happy,” Brynlee whispered, regaining a bit of her strength, though she was still pale.
“Yeah? Tell me what you dreamed about.” Kaia pulled her daughter close, her voice soft.

“I dreamed I was best friends with a bunny, and I helped it pull up carrots. And then 1 flew into space to find aliens…”
Brynlee babbled on, recounting the fuzzy fragments of her dreams.
Just then, the hospital room door burst open. A tall figure strode in, bringing the cold air with him. He looked ragged, with dark circles under his eyes. It was Finnian.
The mother and daughter both stared at the door. The air in the room seemed to freeze.
“Daddy!” Brynlee reacted first, reaching out weakly but joyfully. “Daddy, you’re finally back!”
Finnian rushed to the bed, leaning over to scoop his daughter into a tight embrace. “I’m back, sweetheart. Daddy’s here.”
