felt like the hired help. Walking behind him, Kaia and Miles looked like the actual parents.
Chapter 109
“Daddy, your beard is growing out!” Brynlee was in high spirits because she was finally going home. She reached out with her little hand and rubbed Finnian’s chin. “It’s prickly!”
Finnian caught her hand and pressed a kiss to her knuckles. “I will shave as soon as we get home, okay?”
“Okay! Ooh, you should have Mommy shave it for you!” Brynlee’s little mind was always working, and she dropped the suggestion out of nowhere.
Finnian caught sight of Kaia and Miles walking up behind them. The two were deep in a discussion about a collaborative project now, both looking intensely focused.
His eyes darkened. Hadn’t he spent the night keeping Noelle company? Shouldn’t his ‘first love‘ have made sure he was perfectly groomed?
“Mommy can’t help with that,” Kaia answered smoothly, addressing her daughter rather than him.
Finnian forced a chuckle. “I can do it myself.”
Brynlee pouted, clearly disappointed. “But on TV, the mommies always help the daddies shave, and sometimes they even help them wash their hair! Why can’t Mommy help you?”
Finnian winced. It was painfully obvious the kid was trying to play matchmaker and fix her parents‘ broken relationship.
He couldn’t help but glance at Kaia. She stared blankly at the elevator numbers, completely unbothered.
But the most uncomfortable person in the elevator was undeniably Miles, who suddenly felt like he was trespassing in a war zone.
Thankfully, the elevator was empty and quickly reached the ground floor. Finnian carried Brynlee toward his parked car.
“My car is in the underground lot,” Kaia said. “You go ahead and take her home.”
“I’m parked down there too,” Miles added with a polite smile.
Finnian had no choice but to carry his daughter toward the main exit. As the elevator doors slid shut behind him, he stopped and threw a long, dark look over his shoulder.
On the eighth day of the New Year, the corporate grind officially resumed. The city buzzed back to life, energized and chaotic.
Kaia had an important meeting at Veridian Future that morning. She dropped Brynlee off at her parents‘ house early. Jane and Warren beamed with joy the second they saw their granddaughter.
19-39
After her morning at Veridian, Kaia had to rush over to Aethelstan Biopharma’s headquarters at 3:00 PM. Gordon Hayes had called her in to finalize the handover of a few lingering projects.
When Kala arrived on the 13th floor, the open–plan office was already swamped with activity. Gordon was waiting for her near his office.
Suddenly, someone shrieked, “Yasmine! What’s wrong? You’re completely pale!”
Kaia’s head snapped up. A few desks away, a young female employee was slumped in her office chair, her face ashen, forehead drenched in cold sweat. She sat entirely frozen, tears. streaming silently down her face.
“It hurts…” Yasmine sobbed, the tears falling faster. “I tried so hard to keep this pregnancy… What do I do? Am I losing my baby?”
Kaia hurried over. A dark red stain was blooming across Yasmine’s gray skirt. It looked like. she had bumped into something and was now paralyzed with shock.
Someone had already called 911. The rest of the office stood around, utterly helpless and panicked.
Right then, the sharp shatter of breaking glass echoed from nearby.
Kaia turned. Noelle was standing a few feet away, staring at the floor where she had just dropped her coffee mug.
Kaia frowned. Noelle’s reaction seemed vastly disproportionate to the situation. She looked completely petrified, as if she had just seen a ghost.
“Ms. Lawrence, step back. Let me clean this up so you don’t get cut,” an employee quickly offered, rushing over with a broom.
Noelle absentmindedly pushed a strand of hair behind her ear, nodding faintly. “Right. Be careful.”
She walked over to Yasmine, her voice tight but authoritative. “Why aren’t you taking better care of yourself? If you knew the pregnancy was high–risk, why did you rush back to the office? You’re being completely irresponsible with your own body.”
Being scolded by her boss in the middle of a medical emergency made Yasmine sob even harder.
But to the rest of the office, Noelle looked like a deeply compassionate leader–a boss who genuinely believed a human life mattered more than corporate productivity. That kind of leadership earned serious loyalty.
“Go to the hospital. We’ll talk about work when you’re fully recovered,” Noelle said, crouching down to meet Yasmine’s eyes.
The paramedics arrived minutes later, loading Yasmine onto a stretcher and rushing her out. The bloodstain left on the chair was jarring. The cleaning staff quickly moved in to sanitize the area.
Noelle stared at the spot where the blood had been. The phantorn scent of iron hit her, and she suddenly clapped a hand over her mouth. Turning on her heel, she sprinted toward the restrooms, a violent gag echoing down the hall.
Kaia watched her go, freezing in place.
She remembered the hospital visit she and Finnian had before the holidays. Had Noelle. gotten pregnant that fast?
Her blood ran cold. Driven by a morbid, almost masochistic curiosity, Kaia followed her toward the secluded corner restroom
As she neared the door, she heard the voice of Noelle’s loyal assistant, Wendy Vance.
“Ms. Lawrence, are you okay?”
Noelle sounded like she had just finished throwing up, her voice hoarse and weak. “I’m fine. It’s just… seeing that blood… it brought back a lot of memories.”
Wendy didn’t sound surprised. Her voice was full of pity. “You’re thinking about what happened two years ago, aren’t you?”
