Noelle’s eyes suddenly reddened, but she suppressed the emotions welling up inside her.
She took a quiet breath. “Perhaps my leaving is the best choice for the Sanders family, and for the company.”
After hearing her words, Finnian ripped the resignation form in half, then in half again, and tossed the pieces into the nearby wastebasket.
‘I told you I would protect you, and I won’t go back on my word.”
‘I will not let you go abroad. Get that idea out of your head.”
‘Finnian…” Noelle’s voice trembled as she called his name.
‘I am not approving your resignation.” Finnian finally turned his head. Seeing the fragile tears streaming from her eyes, he grabbed a tissue.
He walked over to her and gently wiped them away. “Don’t cry. Why are you still the same girl who cries the moment things get difficult?”
‘I…” Noelle bit her lip. “Of course I don’t want to leave the Sanders family, eave the company, or leave…”
A sudden knock on the door made Noelle swallow the word “you” before t could escape.
‘Alright, we’re grown–ups now. Stop being so childish. I know you’re upset because I didn’t invite you to the family dinner on Friday. It won’t happen again. From now on, you will have a place at every family dinner.” Finnian soothed her in a low voice, then patted her arm. “Go back to your post. Become that confident, dazzling Noelle Lawrence again.”
Noelle looked up at the man, a dazed expression flickering in her eyes.
“I will.” Noelle turned towards the door. When she opened it, she saw Kaia standing on the other side.
“Kaia, are you here to see Finnian? I’ll get out of your way then,” Noelle said in her usual sweet and gentle tone.
Kaia’s body stiffened almost imperceptibly.
“Come in,” the man’s deep, magnetic voice called out.
Kaia walked into the office and closed the door behind her.
“What is it?” Finnian asked. He looked as though he had just dealt with something unpleasant, a hint of emotional fatigue on his handsome face. Kaia got straight to the point, taking out her phone and playing the conversation she had recorded outside the breakroom.
Finnian’s expression turned cold, and his eyes fixed on her. “Who the hell eaked this information about our daughter?”
Kaia met his gaze with her own cool one. “I’d like to know that too. Not even everyone inside the Sanders family knows the details.”
Her words seemed to carry an unspoken accusation. Finnian’s fingers apped rhythmically on his desk. “How do you want to handle this?”
‘Make an example of her, of course. A warning to others,” Kaia said, enunciating each word.
Finnian’s gaze lingered on her face for a couple of seconds. He clearly hadn’t expected the usually gentle, good–tempered Kaia to make such a decisive and ruthless decision.
‘I’ll handle it,” Finnian said.
Kaia’s eyes inadvertently glanced towards the trash can, where a couple of torn pieces of paper had fallen onto the floor,
“Shouldn’t we also investigate who leaked Brynlee’s medical information in the first place?”
Finnian’s face hardened. “If we fire this gossip, no one else will dare to
spread it.”
Hearing this, Kaia felt a sharp pain in her heart. She understood the implication of his words. She nodded. “Alright. I understand.”
Kaia said nothing more, turned, opened the door, and left.
Finnian immediately summoned his assistant, Dexter, and gave him his orders.
At nine–thirty, Renee Wallace, who had been gossiping loudly in the breakroom that morning, received her termination notice. She stood rozen in place.
Dr. Lawrence, help me…” Renee burst into Noelle’s office in a panic.
